^ i know, right! i'm psyched about the possibility of it being my first pocket pc...unfortunately, no one can tell me when alltel will finally get them in (though online "sources" imply that it will be this month)

Ok. I'm being forced to upgrade from my current phone (Nokia 6230) because I absolutely cannot get Cingular/AT&T coverage *anywhere* in my new place. As long as I'm getting a new phone and new service, I was thinking about getting a windows mobile device. I've heard a lot of good things about the Samsung Blackjack, but that's out of the question b/c it's AT&T only.

So. I've been looking at the Motorola Q, since it seems to be available on pretty much all of the networks. Any reviews on that? It seems to be an older device, is a replacement due out soon, or an updated version with windows mobile 6? The sprint mogul also seems nice (that is the same thing as the 6800, right?) but I don't know if I want to cought up $300 after rebates just for the device. Also, which carriers other than AT&T have 3G around here, if any?

Thanks!

yes, the sprint mogul and htc 6800 are the same thing...as alltel doesn't actually have it out yet, i wasn't sure what street price would be...$300 is a little disappointing

^ one down side to that phone or any slider phone, is that you can't buy a leather covering for it; maybe you could buy a case, but they are annoying, since you have to take the phone out of them to use it, and most likely you will have to wear it on your belt, and i don't like that. no way i could spend this kind of money on a phone and not physically protect it, especially if i use it as one of my sources for backing up data.

i've got the mogul through sprint - got it over a month ago for $288 (no rebates) - the sero price - if you are paying more than that then you aren't doing it right

it is annoying that you can't buy a cover for it - i do have a screen cover on mine that protects the screen but nothing else - i keep the phone in my pocket - haven't ever worn a phone on my belt and i'm not starting now

Ditto. Whatever I get will ride around in my pocket just like the current one does. In 7+ years of carrying a cell phone I've only ever physically damaged one of them (and that was in a fit of stupidity), so as long as I protect the screen I think I'd be OK. It looks like the mogul and the Q are both of reasonable (easily pocketable) size, which was one of the pluses IMO.

the q in its leather covering easily fits into my pocket

i have not physically damaged a phone either but once, but this phone costs more and has more things on it that i would rather protect as much as possible.

i really like the moto q...but a smartphone without wifi in this day and age is just silly...if i'm going to spend that much money on a pocket pc, it seems like it might be smart to get the most ACTUAL features for my money, you know?

the moto q h9 will have wifi

and why do you need wifi? most carriers make you buy plan if you sign a contract. if you buy the phone at retail or from a private owner then it is not mandatory with some companies, such as alltel.

i agree with you quagmire somewhat - i have very rarely used the wifi connection on my mogul - but this is mainly due to me having a laptop nearby most of the time i've needed to use it

with the speed of EVDO i have and with the extra battery drain of having wifi turned on - i don't see the need to use the wifi connection much at all - anytime i've wanted to use a wifi connection i've turned my laptop on - i do sometimes use the mogul for determining if there is an unsecured wireless connection before turning on my laptop but rarely because even if there isn't an available connection i tether the connection from my mogul to my laptop (as i'm doing now)

Unfortunately the upcoming Q9 still doesn't have wifi, which is a little odd. It does run windows mobile 6 though...

I'm thinking that if I like the Q better than the mogul (or anything else that I haven't yet considered) I might wait on the Q9 becoming available.

Of course, since I still have to change carriers due to the irritating no service in house...hmmm. That does make it difficult.

i don't NEED it, just like i don't NEED a pocket PC...however, due to my job, i find myself needing to send emails and such (download/modify/resend specific files) when i don't have my laptop with me...usually, i just head back home or to the office to do it (or, sometimes, out to my car if it's there), but that's not always practical or convenient...in the past 6 months i have, several times per month, found myself in a position where having wifi on my phone would be the PERFECT solution (free wifi is almost never hard to find because of what i do)

i don't think i represent a large percentage of the customer base, so i realize it doesn't quite make sense for manufacturers to rush to include wifi due to the power and size constraints, but if i'm going to spend $200 or $250 on a pocket pc, why not spend $250 or $300 for the added convenience of wifi? stereo bluetooth and a micro/miniSD slot are also requirements of mine (i intend for this to act as a phone, a pocket pc, an ebook reader, a video player, and an mp3 player)

^^ you might be waiting for a while to get the moto q h9, and then is depends on the carrier. i think sprint, verizon (maybe t-mobile) will be the first to get them. alltel seems like they are always late in the game with getting new phones, at least that what it seems. i read that 08/24 is a potential release date for it (although the phone can be bought from europe and used if you are on a gsm network).

quagmire the mogul has all of that - so it's out there - should be a matter of time before price drops too - by default the mogul doesn't do stereo BT though - it's a registry hack

registry hacks are the going thing with smartphones. i guess since they want to 'hide' features to justify a new ui, thus making you buy a new phone for them. resco registry editor is best thing, only it costs 20, but i think it worth it. there is also a free one, phm registry editor, but its rather dated, but it works.

had the ppc6700 (alltel) and switched to the treo 700wx (sprint sero plan). the treo handles MUCH better than the ppc6700. also, w/ an unlimited data plan, wifi becomes an increasingly useless feature.

Went out and looked at the Q, 700wx, and mogul today. I like the mogul the best of the devices, but it's also the most expensive. The 700wx is nice, but bulky, and since it costs almost as much as the mogul... Q isn't bad either and is the cheapest, you can get a sprint Q at best buy for $99 after rebates. Question is, is the mogul worth $200 more than the Q? The thing that is confusing me a bit right now is plan cost...a verizon plan with unlimited data would be $72/mo after state employee discount, the sprint equivalent (unless I'm missing something) would be something like $48.

The fact that Verizon's unlimited data plan is $40/mo and sprint's is $15 doesn't sit right with me. Is there an advantage to the verizon plan, or something I"m missing about sprint's, that explains the large price difference?

the cheap unlimited data plans are a large reason of why i have stuck with sprint for so long - i tether my phone to my laptop a whole lot while i'm traveling and the service/speed is great

you can do similar thru cingular/at&t... its like $20 a month for unlimited "mediaworks", which would do what you want when tethered to a computer...

^^i didn't think you could tether with sprint any more without paying for a "phone as modem" plan, which is like $50-60 a month? if you're doing it with a newish motorola phone, not paying for that plan, and not getting any outrageous charges i'd be interested in knowing how. i know some people are still slipping under the radar with older phones.

i use pdanet to "slip under the radar" - it basically just uses the phone's normal data connection without using the phone as modem/internet sharing - i never would have upgraded my phone had i not been able to do this - i agree that the phone as modem option is ridiculous (i think it's $40?) - it works the same was as the older phones did by basically simulating a #777 dialup connection

yeah pda net is pretty sweet.. i used to use it constantly. i've actually got a dedicated pcmcia card/seperate sim just for data now that work pays for..so $50 a month for that that I don't have to pay

yeah, i know of pdanet but it's my understanding that it only works with treo/windows mobile, correct? i plan to upgrade to a windows mobile phone soon, mainly to take advantage of that. if i'm paying for a data plan, it shouldn't matter if i use it from my phone or my laptop.

Well as to my questions, I went with a sprint mogul through the SERO plan since the rates were pretty unbeatable and I liked the device after test-driving one at the sprint store. Currently waiting on it to get here, then we'll see if I can get any reception. If not, off to verizon I go, and the decision will be reopened...

by all counts on forums, and from what i was specifically told by the man HOLDING the 6800, alltel will (*crosses fingers*) be getting the HTC 6800 (or whatever they're calling it) on the 23rd (as in, thursday)

so help me alltel, i love you, but your retarded "we'll get the phone after it's been discontinued by everyone else" approach makes me want to stab the collective "you"

in case anyone cares, it's my understanding that alltel now officially carries the HTC PPC6800

from letstalk.com: FREE with new plan, $100 with plan extension, $280 with no contract: http://www.letstalk.com/product/product.htm?prId=33245

i think i might order one today without the plan...anyone know what it costs in-store?

you can even look at the ui in the screenshot and tell that. it has the vista look, whereas wm5 has the xp look.

Palm has a new update available to Sprint Treo 700wx devices. It was released a few days ago (08/21/2007) and it's not on the regular support downloads page.
