Reports: Alstott to retire pro career

Former Purdue standout Mike Alstott is expected to annouce his retirement today, two Tampa Bay newspapers reported.

A news conference has been scheduled for 2 p.m.

Alstott has spent 11 seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and is the team's all-time leader in touchdowns with 71 and rushing touchdowns with 58. He is second in team history with 5,088 yards rushing and third in scoring with 432 points.

Alstott also holds several Purdue rushing records, including career yards (3,635) and rushing touchdowns (39), and single-season rushing yards (1,436 in 1995

RIP to the greatest fantasy TD vulture of all time

but you could have just said "retire"

"retire pro career" sounds like it went thru a botched translation

that dude was crazy difficult to tackle

I'm sure J_Hova will be pissed but its another thing that should make the Panthers favorites in the division imo

he didn't have the career stats of 16,000 yarsds in 16 seasons but this is kind of similar to Bettis retiring in Pittsburgh...you dont think you need him with Cadillac (Willie Parker) but he sure is nice to have on 3rd and short or goaline drives

I think J_Hova (he is a Buc fan, right?) will be glad. Alstott was a liability the past couple years

You know, there is this one team down in New Orleans that has something to say about that. Anyway, Berman can't say "you're in good hands with Alstott" anymore. Haha...

Good job to a great Boilermaker. Our best (or 2nd best to Drew Brees) player of the 1990s.

I attended one game with him in it and Purdue was playing Michigan State. Our QB threw a screen pass to Alstott around midfield. He stopped and threw a 50-yard TD to the receiver right on the numbers. Not often you see a fullback do that.

i'm sure they do...but last year they rode the katrina wave, their offense was unknown to any competition, etc...they arent going to surprise anybody this year...and they didnt improve their defense at all...and they dont exactly have a legitimate #1 receiver...and oh yeah, they only won 10 games last year and the Panthers beat them twice

Seriously, what's the going to do when Delhomme gets replaced and he can't say "Daylight come and you gotta Delhomme!" anymore?

Rather than declining because the element of surprise is lost, offenses often get better in their second year in a new system because the players are more comfortable in the system.

With #19 in receiving yards, #26 in receptions, tied for 10th in receiving TDs in his rookie year, a #1 WR is exactly what they have.

The only real improvement of the D is still an important one - bringing in Jason David to start over the terrible Fred Thomas.

The Panthers beating them twice means there is no room for improvement in that dept. for the Panthers, things could only get worse. And oh yeah, the Panthers only won 8.

I can certainly see the Saints regressing after last year, and ceding their division crown to the Panthers in this league of parity and injuries, but I have to say the Saints are still the favorites.

^^i'm not arguing that most people would agree that either the Saints or Panthers would be the favorites, especially after the Vick thing, but Carolina is due

I feel like the Redskins play the Bucs (and have played the Bucs) an unreasonable amount of times for non-divison opponents.

I feel like Alstott randomly has an important play or several touches that are just, well, frustrating as an opposing fan.

I suppose that's a compliment.

GOOD RIDDANCE.

you guys are aware that the scheduling system in the NFL is completely set in stone and the teams dont get to pick their opponents at all, right?

basically the quick version is:

16 games:

- 6 versus division opponents (3 home, 3 away)
- 4 versus division in your conference (rotating...ie Panthers might play NFC East one year...next year NFC West...then NFC North...then back to East, etc) (2 home, 2 away)
- 4 versus division in other conference (rotating...similar to previous item but 4 year cycle instead of 3 year cycle) (2 home, 2 away)
- 2 teams in your conference based on last year's results...to put it simply, these two teams are based on last year's overall results...for example the Panthers play the Cowboys and Packers this year since I think they finished 2nd in their divisions or something

just an FYI for those who may not have known

Although I'll admit I'm not 100% sure what determines the final 2 but I know they're in your conference and it has to do with comparing either records or conferece finish orders based on last year...but its not like college where you can pick some opponents

The final two teams are the teams who finished in the same place as you the previous year in the two divisions other than the division you're scheduled against

So this year the Panthers play the NFC West, so we play the two two teams from the East and North who finished in the same place in their division as we did, so the Packers and Cowboys

You'd have to have Downs not to know that

Yeah, it just has worked out such that we've played the bucs 5 years in a row, counting this upcoming season. Plus a playoff game two seasons ago. And a couple of them have been really close games (i.e., Alstott didn't get in on the two-point conversion ).
