6 credit hours should be about your max.
but if you're going to try and work part time, you'll want to reduce your load proportionally. 8/10/2007 1:19:53 AM |

honestly i would say a broad like you does too much shit, but a broad like you gets a dude like me to say that cause you can actually do a shitload of stuff and still actually keep up with it
my guess is gonna be like 18 credit hours and 4 jobs is too much for you
but like 18 credit hours and 3 jobs isnt too bad...is that 4th job that breaks the camels back
i mean u are in 2 pretty decent majors, you are pretty cute, u got a lot of jobs, u probably get jobs based on your looks...whats not to dislike?!?? 8/10/2007 2:55:56 AM |

I'd say a safe rule, to keep your sanity, is 50 - 2*credit hours = hours you could work each week w/o being unable to keep up in school.
It's about what I have been doing since sophomore year. I keep myself scheduled for 15 hours a week at work, and will come in at miscellaneous times to help out or to make extra hours (there's always stuff that needs restocking, organizing, or we're just shorthanded). This way during the rough times I can hold off on work a bit, but when things get slow I can go in and make some extra money.
I should mention that, as of now, I have pretty much no extracurriculars. The ones I do cut into my work time, and that's allowable since they're just ASCE meetings. 8/10/2007 9:56:07 PM |

I'm sure there is no magic number, it's all perception. What I consider to be too much might not be what another person thinks is too much. For me- 15 credit hours, 10 hours of work and 2 hours of extracurriculars per week would be plenty.
Think about it in terms of balance. Do you feel like you are able to adequately balance your social life, academic life, work life and extracurriculars? If you are neglecting one area and favoring another then perhaps it's time to revisit and reassess how you are spending your time.
Take some time to examine why you want to take on so much? What outcome are you hoping for?

I'd say 9 credit hours and full-time drinking will be a perfect balance for anyone. 8/10/2007 10:32:05 PM |

I took 18 hours last semester with 3 labs that were technically 0 credit marked, worked 25 hours a week, did club field hockey 2x a week from 7:30-9:30 with a game every saturday.
That made me want to die, I hardly got to see my fiancee and friends except sundays which was pretty much catch-up work day.
You should still do enough school so you graduate on time, but work enough not to starve. You can always slack a tad on hours during the fall/spring and do some summer classes to stay on track. 8/12/2007 6:29:07 PM |

Honestly, I made better grades while taking 18 hrs and working 16 hrs a week and spending about 10 hrs a week on extracurriculars than the semester that I decided to take only 14 hours and not work and ended up failing 2 classes. On the flip side, I also failed a summer school class while trying to take 2 classes and work 10 hrs. It is going to completely depend on what your job is and the professors you have. Signing up for 18 or 19 hours and then dropping the worst class by the drop date if/when you feel overloaded is a good way to balance your coursework. I think you mentioned in another thread you were trying to be an E115 TA. That is a great job while in school because most of your work hours are not set. I found it much easier to handle than trying to work evenings at Jersey Mike's (and it looks good on your resume).
I've recently determined that my max is working 45 hrs/week at a real job plus a full time graduate courseload, planning a wedding, trying to build a garage, and swimming in the mornings before work. However, I seem to be maintaining a 3.5 GPA and am almost halfway done, so I'm too stubborn to drop down to a normal load. 8/12/2007 7:46:05 PM |

hahaha no matter how many extracurriculars you don't have and how many hours you aren't taking, you will never have enough time to do aerospace senior design and get a good night's sleep. 8/14/2007 5:23:33 PM |

i'm looking forward to 6 credit hours of 500-700 courses (one's a real ass kicking), 3 hours research, teaching up to 3 labs a week, and working on my own research/literature review/thesis.
i will miss you, bed.
oh, and i think everyone's limits are different. but limits are a lot higher when you're determined. 8/15/2007 9:39:14 PM |
