Bush adviser: Military draft worth considering Lute says Bush has made clear he doesn’t think draft is necessary
WASHINGTON - Frequent tours for U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan have stressed the all-volunteer force and made it worth considering a return to a military draft, President Bush's new war adviser said Friday.
"I think it makes sense to certainly consider it," Army Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute said in an interview with National Public Radio's "All Things Considered."
"And I can tell you, this has always been an option on the table. But ultimately, this is a policy matter between meeting the demands for the nation's security by one means or another," Lute added in his first interview since he was confirmed by the Senate in June. Story continues below ?advertisement
President Nixon abolished the draft in 1973. Restoring it, Lute said, would be a "major policy shift" and Bush has made it clear that he doesn't think it's necessary.
"The president's position is that the all volunteer military meets the needs of the country and there is no discussion of a draft. General Lute made that point as well," National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said.
In the interview, Lute also said that "Today, the current means of the all-volunteer force is serving us exceptionally well."
Still, he said the repeated deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan affect not only the troops but their families, who can influence whether a service member decides to stay in the military.
"There's both a personal dimension of this, where this kind of stress plays out across dinner tables and in living room conversations within these families," he said. "And ultimately, the health of the all-volunteer force is going to rest on those sorts of personal family decisions."
Draft history The military conducted a draft during the Civil War and both world wars and between 1948 and 1973. The Selective Service System, re-established in 1980, maintains a registry of 18-year-old men.
Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., has called for reinstating the draft as a way to end the Iraq war.
Bush picked Lute in mid-May as a deputy national security adviser with responsibility for ensuring efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan are coordinated with policymakers in Washington. Lute, an active-duty general, was chosen after several retired generals turned down the job. 8/11/2007 4:17:37 PM |

My statement is still true, he is still NOT classified as a General, otherwise known as a 4-star general, of which we have many. So, why not go ask one of them before we start asking 3-star, 2-star, or privates what policies George Bush is going to implement. 8/11/2007 6:54:06 PM |

Regardless of if Lute's comment has merit or not, the war planners will not implement a draft cause they don't want this war to cause civilians to sacrifice anything. 8/12/2007 8:23:39 PM |

hold on lemme look at TSB page 1 and see what i can find
this stood out "Yet Another "Anti-Gay" Republican busted ... "
i just dont know how you can even deny that not only do "righties call everyone a fagot" when a liberal gets busted for something, but the same isnt true that the "lefties call everyone a fagot" when a conservative gets busted? are you honestly arguing that this doesnt go on?
i thought it was extremely common knowledge that partisan bias goes both ways in TSB

So you were just talking out of your ass, as usual. We were talking about the literal use of the word "faggot." you just backpedaled to the metaphorical use of the word when you got called out.
btw, dude.
fagot is a bundle of sticks
faggot is a derogatory term for homosexuals.

so your method of trolling in this thread is to take every word literally
i prefer your other trolling method of just a short capitalized phrases like "CLINTON DID IT" or some other dumb sarcasm
EDIT:
btw for the record, I made note that your method of trolling was to take everything literally before you edited your post to admit that that was your method of trolling
2nd edit:

The trick I used was to soak applewood chips for a while so that they would smoke instead of burn outright and then put those in the bottom before I fired it up. They always turned out great. I remember cooking 6 racks for the superbowl and all them being gone in about 20 minutes.
But then when I moved I left it on the back porch because I couldn't fit it in the camaro (which is stupid to move in anyway). I went back the next day and our landlord had either thrown it out or let one of her mexicans have it. 8/13/2007 2:13:28 PM |

As I understand it, the sea-wall fiasco involved me and everyone else trying to explain to you that many urban areas already have a sea wall and you proclaiming that such a simple and obvious solution for controlling storm surge was somehow rediculous.
Not to mention, you still owe me $100.

To the ill-informed: At least one high-profile Democrat has introduced legislation to draft Americans into national service, military and otherwise. The following video is of Representative Charles Rangel (D-NY) during a recent appearance on Face the Nation:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=V5KKfEpxA6E
Meantime, in the real world, this was said by one of the handful of Republicans that mattered concerning the draft issue:
Quote : | "Outgoing Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld told Congress in June 2005 that 'there isn't a chance in the world that the draft will be brought back.'" |

SandSanta, the price of a gallon of gasoline on the New York Mercantile Exchange is $1.9738, still $0.7649 shy of winning your $100 bet which ran out a long time ago. Guess I was right when I said "I don't want to encourage you to skip out more than you probably already will."
