dime sized spider at most .its legs were short but not skinny i thought they pretty thick for how small the spider was. it was a pretty symetrical dark black spider
Quote : | " while i was laying on my driveway i noticed a line of spiderweb in my face and knocked it off then i felt something on the back of my head and hit a spider off. now theres an ich and a small hole in the back of my head where the spider was " |

there's only two poisonous spiders in NC.
The black widow could be what you described, but if so, it's a male, which are either venom free or have far less venom in their bites (i can't remember which) than the females, which are quarter size. Also, I seriously doubt a black widow would be on a web in your driveway. That's not the type of place they generally hang out. 8/13/2007 8:15:05 AM |

The picture is pretty deceiving. The spider is pretty big for run-of-the-mill spiders that you see, but it's only about 3" or so in diameter.
It seems to share a web with 2 other tiny spiders though that flank it about a foot away on each side, but on the opposite side of the web. Kind of an odd arrangement...8/15/2007 10:20:24 PM |

havent been able to sleep for the past couple hours b/c of a fucking spider. got caught off guard by it when i groggily went to the bathroom at like 2. when i saw it i had no idea wtf it was and thought there was a decent chance it could be a brown recluse so i was pretty reluctant to attempt to kill it, especially w/out shoes on.
so after sitting at the comp in my room for a few minutes, the damn thing crawls in under my door, and it's fucking fast as hell. i finally ended up hurling a textbook at the thing to kill it and i caught it (after it was dead lol) in something in case i need to have it ID'd. i also took pics of it before killing it, in the event that the thing got away so i could still use those for reference.
i did a bit of research after the fact, and i feel like it's probably doubtful that it's a brown recluse and think maybe wolf spider or something like that instead, but i really have no idea.
here are a couple pics if anyone that knows something about it wants to take a look and give their $.02
and yes i know i'm a pussy. i've just always be terrified of spiders.

Brown Recluse spiders have a violin shaped marking behind its head. pretty distinctive on adults but harder to spot on young ones. I saw more than I liked when renting a place that was full of them. Adults can get as big as a quarter. Talk about living in fear I never got bit but my roommate did and ended up in the hospital 4 times.
Brown recluses come out at night to forage. The most common way to get bitten by them is to roll over on one in bed at night. They crawl through your sheets forages for bed mites and other small insects. Or they'll hang out in your clothes or shoes in dark closets. They don't spin typical webs and hide out in dark places.
Brown Recluse bites are NASTY. The bites start off as white blisters, swells and then turns into a lesion showing the deteriorating flesh below. lots of other side effects too. 8/16/2007 8:41:19 AM |

that's a wolf spider. my roommate lives in the finished basement and has constant issues with them in the winter. i have to put half a dozen outside each year, cause he gets freaked out by bugs. they are fast as hell and scary looking, but i've never had any issues. 8/16/2007 1:42:33 PM |

Brown Recluse spiders are pretty uncommon in this state. Bite reports are dramatically overstated. Doctors routinely misdiagnose them simply because they see necrosis. Go check out the spider page at UC-Riverside (big recluse buff there who goes on and on about the myths of brown recluse). 8/22/2007 12:40:58 AM |

FYI for whoever thought the wolf spider was a brown recluse. Brown recluse are TEENY. So are black widows in comparison to all those big web weaving spiders. They have huge abdomens and little spindly legs and hang out in really dark places, like under trash cans and sheds. So, if a big fuzzy spider is just wandering around in your bathroom, it's probably not one of those.
That said, my chinchillas love to torture spiders and slowly rip all their legs off.
