I tried to post in Aristotle's topic, but it just so happens I didnt remember until today, when it went 90 days old.
Moving right along, this year's schedule is as follows:
Sat, Sep 01 Connecticut 2:00 p.m. Sat, Sep 08 @Virginia 12:00 p.m. LFS/R Sat, Sep 15 @Northwestern 8:00 p.m. Big Ten Network Sat, Sep 22 @Navy 1:00 p.m. CSTV Sat, Sep 29 @Miami Sat, Oct 06 Wake Forest Sat, Oct 13 Virginia Tech Sat, Oct 27 @Florida State Sat, Nov 03 Clemson Sat, Nov 10 Georgia Tech Sat, Nov 17 @Notre Dame 2:30 p.m. NBC Sat, Nov 24 @North Carolina
I'd like to think one win is possible, but this team is going 0-12, barring a big upset
bball should be better than last year, but still will not contend for first place 8/18/2007 4:02:18 PM |

Quote : | "As September nears, football fever is beginning to spread across the entire ACC. Well, everywhere but Durham, that is. As the ACC continues to attempt to remake itself into a powerhouse football conference, the desolation that is the Duke football program is just one of the items that isn't helping the impression of it still being a 'second-rate' league when compared to the likes of the SEC or Big Ten. True, every BCS conference seemingly has at least one bottom feeding program (Indiana, Vanderbilt, Arizona, Baylor, etc) ... but as Sunday Morning Quarterback pointed out earlier this year, Duke is far, far worse than any of those teams. Frankly, Duke doesn't care about football. At all.
The saddest part of this is that Duke has an excellent athletic department outside of football, and they have a proud past football tradition. Duke won 6 of the first 10 ACC titles, they have had 3 NFL Hall of Fame players and they played in a pair of Rose Bowls. That's a history to be proud of, something that Duke football could be building off of. Instead, they seem to have given up over the past two decades (3 winning seasons in the past 20, none since 1994). In fact, Duke football has slipped so far that they have had 7 winless seasons in the ACC in the past 11 years and have only won a grand total of 9 league games in that stretch. And it's not getting better in recent years, last year's team was so awful that they got shut out by a 1-AA team. At home.
I understand that it's tough to regularly win in football at a small private school with high academic standards, just look at Stanford or Northwestern or Wake Forest. But if you compare those schools to Duke, there's a chasm between them. Those schools put some form of effort into their programs and are competitive on at least a somewhat regular basis. It would be a huge feat for Duke to simply rise to the level of recent Northwestern teams, let alone winning an ACC title like Wake Forest just did (and yes, Steve Spurrier won the ACC at Duke in 1989 - when the current freshman on this year's team were being born). Heck, Wake is smaller than Duke and is considered a premier academic program in their own right - it should shame the Duke athletic department that their next door neighbors can be so successful at something they have so utterly failed at.
At some point the ACC office needs to step in and let Duke know that they can't keep stealing revenue from the rest of the league when they aren't even making a token attempt to be competitive. The first season as a 12 team league, the ACC's revenue from TV contracts, the championship game and bowl revenue increased by over $20 million. That's a lot of money, and Duke is basically robbing the other 11 members of the league for their share to fund the rest of their athletic department. Duke is essentially holding the rest of the ACC hostage over their basketball program, one of the most profitable and recognizable in the country. Knowing that the ACC can't risk losing Duke basketball, they have decided to stop even pretending to run a Division 1-A football program and are just sending out their version of the Washington Generals to collect paychecks.
Short of a change in the athletic department philosophy (likely meaning a house cleaning of the current staff) - I just don't see how this situation will change, and as long as Coach K is at Duke a house cleaning isn't going to happen. Realistically, the rest of the ACC schools might have to put pressure on Duke to initiate some form of change, because it appears nothing is going to happen from internally. I don't think it's too much to ask for Duke football to reach a 3-5 win per year level, and be capable of beating Division 1-AA opponents regularly - what you would consider a minimum requirement for a team to be a full member of a BCS conference. Is it going to happen? Maybe, particularly if the rest of the league continues to rise and the amount of shared money continues to grow - at some point the other AD's are going to tire of shipping their hard earned football cash to fund Duke's non-revenue sports programs." |

^^^ who is that quote from? they need to do some research before writing such a ridiculous article. The ACC has little to no power in forcing Duke to become more competitive in football. The suggestion that Duke or any team must win x number of games on a regular basis to be a full conference member is absurd. It has been a bylaw, since conference inception, that the ACC will not allow partial members. This is one rule through the years that the powers that be have and will remain steadfast. Duke is also a charter member of the ACC. It would take an act of god himself to forcefully remove a charter member from the ACC, not to mention the national uprising that would occur if such an academic institution such as Duke were to be expelled from any conference. The knight commission would have a field day with that one. Furthermore, if the conference was to ever think about cutting Duke out of football revenue sharing, it's members had better not expect to receive any revenue generated by the success of Duke on the hardwood. Without any hard statistics in front of me I would venture a guess that Duke's revenue contribution to the league from basketball success over the past twenty years, i.e. tournament and t.v. payouts, far outweighs there take in football money. 9/2/2007 11:48:17 AM |

Posted: Today at 6:52 a.m. Updated: Today at 7:49 a.m.
Durham — A female student was injured when a group of students tore up a goal post in a post-game celebration after Duke University snapped its 22-game losing streak in a win over Northwestern University on Saturday.
Around 11:30 p.m., around 300 students gathered in Wallace Wade Stadium and tore down a goal post, said Phyllis Cooper, spokesperson for Duke campus police.
Students carried the goal post to the Quad in the center of West Campus. They were attempting to raise the goal post outside Duke Chapel when one side of the post buckled and struck a female student in the head, Cooper said.
She was alert and talking after the injury occurred, officials said.
The injured student was taken to Duke Hospital and remained there early Sunday morning. The extent of her injuries was not known, and campus police declined to release a name.
Students said hundreds of people continued to celebrate Duke's victory on the Quad after the accident.
Cooper said the university has made no decision has been made yet on whether it will take any disciplinary measures against students involved in the celebration.
Students were celebrating Duke's 20-14 win over Northwestern in Evanston, Ill., on Saturday night. The victory snapped a 22-game losing streak, the longest in the country." |
