I'm watching a dog for some people while they're out of town and it can't seem to keep any water down. Yesterday I gave it a bowl of water and everytime it would drink it would spit it out 5 minutes later all over the floor. It didn't seem to be in pain or anything, it would just stop whatever it was doing and spew out the water (and food if it had eaten any recently) and then continue on. After about the 3rd time I called the owner and was like 'hey wtf is going on, is he okay? should i take him to the vet?' and they were like, 'no he just does that when he gets hot and drinks too much.' Well, the dog wasn't too hot because he was mostly indoors except to piss and he threw up again this morning when I gave him some water and food before I left for work and before he had gone outside to piss, so he wasn't hot and I didn't give him a lot of water.

Is this common? Anyone know wtf is going on and how to make the dog stop spitting up water?

have you dog sat him before? if so, are you in a new place where the surroundings aren't familiar to him? my s-i-l's dog for a long while would always yack on my floor b/c she was nervous about me. i've dog sat her over 20 times, and i'd say for the first 10 times i dog sat her she yacked.

it could be that, it could be what the owner said (they know the dog best afterall...and while you might not thing the dog is hot, he may very well be) or he's sick. but if the owner doesn't seem alarmed, then i wouldn't be either...as i said they know the dog best.

What breed of dog is it?

Does it retch and vomit or does it simply spit it up (so, like a drunk person over a toilet or like a baby spitting up food)?

it spits up.

i limited the amount of water i gave it yesterday and this morning and it seemed to do a lot better, no more 'spills'

luckily it's an inside dog so this isn't a problem

it's a 'cockapoo?' haha

If it's just spitting it out, no vomiting or anything, I'd say it's just drinking too fast and being a doofus. To keep a dog hydrated without it gorging itself on water (and thus making it want to pee too) you can just keep a bunch of ice cubes in its water dish for it to lick.
