I went out to tellula's last night in chapel hell and kept an open tab. I ordered two drinks and decided that was it and about 30 minutes closed out my tab. Well, looking online in my account I see that 36 bucks was charged to my card that wasn't from me. So, my question, how would I go about dealing with this? Confront the bar first? Call the bank?
I'm a poor college kid who wants his damn money back. 8/22/2007 2:41:07 PM |

well, yeah, I have the receipt for 12 bucks which I did spend, but there was also another seperate charge of 36 bucks that I didn't order. My first thought is that someone succesfully bought their drinks on my tab 8/22/2007 2:46:49 PM |

Your first thought would be correct. Take it up with the card company and say you didnt authorize the second transaction, since there's two separate tabs and thus two separate transactions. They'll probably follow through with it seeing it like that. If not, call up the bar and ask for your money back, they should see it the same way. 8/22/2007 2:51:37 PM |

Just dispute the charge with your cc company. If your story is true and the bar fucked up then they will have no signature from you and you'll have no trouble at all getting it reversed. I'd talk to the management at the bar first and give them a chance to look at the receipts, but show no mercy if they don't fix it very quickly. Also make sure you take note of the name of the person you speak with and the time you talked to them just in case you have to go further.

i would just call the bar, tell them you have the receipt to show just $12 which you signed.... tell them you suspect that someone else accidentally charged to it...
the bar owner would most likely give you a refund no questions asked b/c: (1) you can show proof if needed (2) prob happens to them a lot (3) they make enough money that they're not willing to lose a customer
but if they give you attitude, just say the whole college campus of tww won't ever go there again...that's like a major loss of revenue for them haha

no, it's not. Wait for it to post. Once it posts, then call the bank. 8/23/2007 9:11:56 AM |

I've seen that before when I went to Playmakers, the 2 holds on my account. Just wait until it posts and then if it doesn't fix, then call. 8/23/2007 9:47:36 AM |

i routinely get $20-40 holds on a card when i go to a bar 8/23/2007 12:47:21 PM |

i've heard its common, but never once have i had more than a couple dollars extra on a hold, and its always fixed. this $20-$40 stuff is ridiculous 8/23/2007 4:58:33 PM |

They are holding triple the bill on top of the actual charge. That is crazy. My fiance works for a bank and deals with this daily when the college kid overdrafts for two beers. Rarely, does he see a vendor hold such a large percentage.
Even if it is becoming common, it is nonsense. I can understand withholding 20% (which would be a crappy tip in a bar) but not $40.

they usually put a hold on as soon as the tab is held right? so they have no idea what you are going to spend.... 8/23/2007 5:35:12 PM |

something similar happened to me a few months ago
we just confronted the bar about it, explained the situation, and they were more than willing to refund the money 8/23/2007 5:44:06 PM |

i never have that problem. i just put my receipts into my wallet. then i hold them until they can be put into ms money. then they sit in a box on my desk. then when they clear the bank and adjust in ms money i throw them away.
maybe try that@@! 8/23/2007 6:09:43 PM |
