It was something most people would probably do, and I'm sure its been done dozens of times in the past.
The Steelers front office might be pissed a little, but I think they're probably thankful he did what he did...he did rush for over 1300 that year.
Otherwise they would have been stuck with Richard Huntley as their feature back. 8/22/2007 6:16:44 PM |

Huntley was the leading rusher for the panthers that year we were 1-15.
Thats how much we sucked. 8/22/2007 6:19:59 PM |

The injury bit wasn't even my favorite tidbit from the book
Quote : | "Bettis's other revelations include that he thinks former Broncos linebacker Bill Romanowski is "a coward" and that he had a secret appendectomy before the 1999 season, which the team told him not to tell the media about. To avoid having his name show up on hospital records, he registered under the name Tex Goldstein. " |

i don't have a problem with it.
i'm not sure the steelers would have won the super bowl without him. not so much from his play, but his mentoring was very important. that 75 yard touchdown run from parker came after bettis told willie when and where to look for the hole to open up. that's just one example. 8/22/2007 7:46:19 PM |

Yeah if you read it a little closer he was actually injured...
He tried to play through it and struggled so he emphasized the injury by faking a "flare up" after a short yardage play.
I don't blame NFL players one bit. It's amazing to me how little of their contracts are guaranteed compared to other sports. 8/23/2007 7:05:34 AM |

He wasn't overrated until the latter part of his career when his body started breaking down a little.
http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/2354/career
Look at those season stats in the late 90's.
There were a few seasons in there where he was consistently one of the most difficult runners in the league to stop. In the 4th quarter there was perhaps no one better at moving the chains when the defenses were worn down.
He was an incredible combination of power and agility.
