when coming out of reverse and into drive, is it bad to put it in drive while you're still rolling backwards? if so, why? /car noob 8/25/2007 10:48:12 AM |

I would say that you stand to damage the gearbox and/or the crankshaft
But I am a n00b. 8/25/2007 10:49:50 AM |

on a fwd, it puts a lot of shockload on the cv axles and tends to break them, its a lot worse on an automatic than a manual 8/25/2007 10:50:45 AM |

I always thought it was ok to go from reverse to forward in motion than the other way around. Even the gearbox doesn't make any sounds in the former.8/25/2007 10:53:21 AM |

just the sound of an axle popping as the joint grenades

Depends on the transmission. I used to do it in my jeep a lot and paid the price for it, the transmission is a slush box now. I messed it up a few times doing burnouts like that too 8/25/2007 11:26:59 AM |

meh, if only 1 or 2 mph it won't matter, the torque converter will take up the shock load without a problem 8/25/2007 11:37:34 AM |

The biggest thing that would bother me is if the overrun clutch assembly (sprag clutch) might take a beating. But the sprag clutch usually doesn't engage or function when the car is in drive; however, if you drop it into L1, then it does. 8/25/2007 3:43:33 PM |
