I have a Gigabyte GA-M61P-S3 motherboard on a computer I built and 95% it worked fine...but sometimes it wouldn't boot and I would hit reset and it would work fine. No, it freezes at the "splash screen" and stalls. It does not give me any beeps to assist in diagnosing. Any suggestions as to what to look at? Any have experience with Gigabyte support (their website is slow as Christmas)?

reset the bios options to default and/or update the bios to the latest version
if you have multiple memory sticks, try it with one at a time
configure your boot menu so it goes straight to the hdd

random stall on startup are for certain either heat or memory related. check your memory timings to be sure they are running at their SPD and correct voltage.

I am fairly sure it isn't a heat issue. It is only on a second before that happens. I can't imagine it getting too hot that fast. It could be the memory timing. When I say it freezes at the splash screen, it is the splash screen of the motherboard....I can't even get it into the bios.

are you overclocking?

if you ever do get into the bios, check the temps. if you think it might be heat related, reseat your cpu cooler (and put reapply the thermal paste).

No I am not overclocking. I am not ruling out heat, but it couldn't freeze due to heat from a cold boot after like a second could it? The temperature was fine before. I think memory is going to be the issue.

I figured it out.

I updated the BIOS and that didn't fix it, but in the process I figured out what it was. My Sansa mp3 player was causing the startup to stall, but just removing it would allow it to continue. I think something changed to cause that to happen, because it didn't before. Oh well. Thanks for the help guys.
