I'm looking to get my girlfriend a plant for her dorm room. I'm not getting a cactus or plant with thorns. Suggestions should be of relatively small, potted plants, flowering or no, and can survive in a dorm.

If anyone has 1st hand experience with a certain type of plant, that would be good too.

I don't know much about plants, but my mom had an African violet for several years that seemed to grow well despite pretty much everything that happened to it.

I had a heartleaf philodendron in my dorm room. It was awesome. You can't kill those things! I still have it and it has grown soo much now. Probably 10ft long now.

jade is good, but never grows (grows that slowly)... it just kinda stays the same.

you have some good ones posted

I had a snake plant
I had an African Violet
both were great...

I can see how bamboo would do well

Also I got a "Marginata" Dracaena---(it looks like a little palm tree) at Harris Teeter in Cameron Village in 1999 and I still have it now...it has since had a baby and is doing quite well. It has been "watered" with beer, and is planted in frat house soil and has lived. Quite possibly the easiest plant to take care of EVER.

Scindapsus aureus or Money Plant. They grow really easily and you have to only water rarely. If you snip off a piece and stick it in potting mix they just grow roots in no time.
