Looking for something $250-$350 range.

Please forgive my confusion on unmanaged/managed switches. I would like to work a little with VLAN's and keeping the network a little more tidy. Also would like to be able to see what ports are up and running through a web interface.

http://www.cdwg.com/shop/products/default.aspx?EDC=512294

This one doesn't look too bad.

Any ideas?

if you don't need a new one, you can probably get a used Cisco 2950 for $100 or so

You can find used Cats and Procurves (HP) on ebay pretty cheap.

if you don't understand the difference then well, read wiki.. if you still don't understand the difference, please stop any instance of IT related work.

Thanks

managed means you have some interface into the switch whereby you can tweak various settings and monitor health and/or statistics.

unmanaged means you have no interface to configure or monitor--you just plug shit into it and forget about it.

I have a Cisco Catalyst 2900XL that works awesome. They're cheap on eBay too.

If you're doing VLAN's it has to be managed. Managed switches are the higher end, usually rack-mounted switches. Examples of unmanaged switches are Linksys, D-Link, and the like. Managed means it has some kind of user-configuration interface. Unmanaged means you just plug stuff in and that's where your creativity ends.

Ah yea I am weighing between a Cisco or D-Link.

Sounds like the Cisco 2900XL would have a good management console, does it have a web interface?

Thanks for the recommendations.

yes, it has a web interface. I've never used it because nothing beats a CLI.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst2900xl_3500xl/release12.0_5_wc_1_/swg/swgcms.html

if you're going the ebay route, I'd suggest a 2950 over a 2900xl. They run about the same price on ebay, and the 2950 is still supported as far as bug fixes, etc. the 2900XL is obsolete as of a couple of years ago, and is very light on features (which may or may not be important to you)

both will definitely handle basic VLAN segmentation if that's all you're after.

Yeah...that's like "I am weighing between a Kia or a Lamborghini"
Not even the same ballpark.

Yes, the 2900XL has a web interface, but I don't use it, so I disabled and removed it from mine. CLI is a piece of cake once you learn to use it.
