So, anybody know of any free utilities that will write random data to the blank section of a hard drive? Aka, so files can not be recovered??

If you're on XP, use cipher /w:c:

nothing will speed it up because it is a function of the hdd speed

just suck it up

will do..gonna change some partition sizes around so this could be done a bit quicker in the future though.. i started another utility right after i made this thread and so far it's only about half way done.. from what i've been reading though that's pretty typical
