when i turn my car on after its been off for a while i hear this loud screeching sound like metal against metal, or like someone scraping a blackboard with their nail
and if i start moving i hear it for a while then it stops
anyone know what this might be?

it could still be the belt also. i'm guessing you didn't check the tensioner when you changed it...9/18/2007 9:12:44 PM |

with the car running, carefully stick a bar of soap against the inside of the belt for about 10 sec. if it's the belt, the noise will go away. 9/18/2007 9:15:48 PM |

are you guys joking? if i try to put a bar of soap on a running belt i'll probably lose my hand maybe i'll spray some wd-40 9/19/2007 10:55:09 AM |

unless you've got down syndrome or are the clumsiest fucker ever you aren't going to have a problem lightly putting one side of the bar of soap against the belt. it isn't going to rip it out of your hand or magically suck in/destroy your hand.
think about it. 9/19/2007 11:03:12 AM |

Yeah I'm gonna suggest against the WD-40, unless you like your belt better on the ground... 9/19/2007 11:07:38 AM |

yeah, the wd-40 will get rid of any squealing but the purpose of the belt is to drive the accessories. if you spray lubricant on a belt, it'll just slip unnoticed totally defeating the purpose of having the belt on there in the first place. 9/19/2007 11:26:27 AM |

90% of you were wrong, it was the lack of any oil in my engine that cause the noise which yall should have figured out since it happens only after the car gets cold, which is when the oil dripps down to the bottom, anyways its not conclusive but i put oil in and so far so good 10/3/2007 8:56:42 PM |

^no, none of us should have figured that out since we all maintain our shit. 10/4/2007 8:31:54 AM |

Extremely low engine oil isn't exactly a natural diagnosis, especially considering most folks check it periodically to prevent something like this from happening. (Assuming this wasn't a catastrophic leak that recently showed up, and then a newly appeared oil spot should have been a clue...)
I'm also willing to bet that it wasn't "lack of any oil" because it would have seized in very short order were that the case. "Insufficient oil" maybe. 10/4/2007 10:08:04 AM |
