Basketball improvements I have been trying to think of a way to save the NCAA basketball because my feeling is it is about to disapear due to competition from the NBA and the International leagues. The largest problems are due to a lack of innovation which has made the other leagues leave them in the dust for one there is a problem in that coaches think they are the stars. Some teams feel like the ultimate sine of being a good coach is to see how long you can make 5 talented basketball players dribble and pass it around the perimeter without making any real move before their instincts as basketball players take over and they decide to try and get the ball into the basket. this is considered "good coaching" by the pundits and reinforces this idea. College analysts have no concept of pace, so the teams that have the lowest scoring games are automaticly considered great defensive teams and their coaches are hailed, even if its very inefficeint. Let's take a look first at the shot clock wich is the main culprit. Shot clocks are terrible in NCAA. 35 seconds is a lifetime on a basketball court. What this means to most of the ego-coaches (Not Coach K and Roy Williams though thank god) is 12 more seconds of reinforcing your name as a good defensive coach i.e. letting your players sit and pass around the perimeter with no mission. 23 second shot clock would severly motivate coaches to focus more on basketball and less on their reputations. In NBA players are wrongly considered all to be me-first though they are few and far between. in college more than half of all coaches are me-first Secondly let's analyze the state of the basketball court. One think that is superior in college basketball is the three point line. There is enough room to work from the corner unlike NBA. IMO a major improvement to NBA, NCAA, and international lines are the following and I have suggested this before it is shortening the court. This would allow less time each possession of uncontested slow dribbling up the court that usually happens... esp. at the NCAA level, though many NBA teams like Spurs and Pistons do this too. international ball this is not so much a problem. But the other factor that it matters in all leagues is the focus of the game. This allows for more focus on basketball and less on having to be a marathon runner. If any of you play much pickup ball like me you know the court is way too long and rewards marathoners over good basketball. An idea I really like that is tossing around in my head is a widening of the court. This would help the NBA bigtime because the corner is too tight, and in all leagues it would increase the level of creativity allowed. basketball players are smart people and they will find amazing plays to do with more width on the court. This is just my first of many articles summing up ways to make improvements I know some aren't realistic but it's important to have dialogue and think about innovation or else the world will stagnate. Special thanks to my friends who helped me write this article.

I like the college game a lot. I like where the three point line is (or where it's going now). I like the 35 second clock, it tests the patience of the players, and allows smaller teams, like the Princetons of the world, to compete with the big boys. Remember they were able to beat UCLA in the NCAA tournament in 1996 I believe. Also it allowed us to beat UNC this year, b/c we could slow the game down and allow the players to not have to run up and down the court as much. College basketball is incredibly popular. They are going to start having the Final Four seat over 70k in the upcoming years. I don't think any NBA playoff game could do that. The Spurs used to play in the Alamodome but hardly ever sold it out. In regards to college coaches with big egos, you don't think a lot of NBA coaches have big egos? I think if college coaches weren't treated like gods by the fanbases when they are winning then maybe there wouldn't be as many with big egos. That's the nature of the game though. If you win a national title at a lot of schools, you'll get the court or a building on campus named after you.

I am curious as to why you chose to introduce yourself with "Hi, you don't know me but my e-p33n is tremendous. I have chosen to grace this quaint message board while I wait for flood control on ESPN.com to wear off. You should care because my e-p33n is so huge that most of it has been purged in order to avoid making ESPN.com a paid subscription site." 9/5/2007 11:41:38 PM |
