Not too long ago I was reading online that ECU has/had 13 players that committed to ACC schools but didn't qualify academically...ending up at ECU. I can't find the original site with that info. Was that a load of crap or somewhat true? (I remember Chuck bitching about it last year after we lost to them) 9/7/2007 11:38:35 AM |

The only Amato quote I heard about non-qualifiers was about Akrom. I think by the time we lost to ECU he had given up because he knew he was already canned. 9/7/2007 11:46:05 AM |

This is not news. ECU is a joke of a university academically. They are basically unranked in all college academic rankings. 9/7/2007 11:50:00 AM |

How much different are their academic requirements than State's? Is it a conference thing or a school thing? 9/7/2007 11:50:45 AM |

as far as athletics goes, it's a conference thing.
There are NCAA academic requirements, which all schools must meet for players. Each conference also sets their own requirements, of which the ACC's are more stringent than the NCAA minimums. On top of that each school has it's own requirements, which at a minimum match the conference and/or NCAA requirements, or in some cases are much more stringent.
Duke, for example, has much higher academic requirements than that required by the ACC.
ECU's requirements are probably the same as the NCAA minimum, but certainly much lower than the ACC. 9/7/2007 12:30:46 PM |

All public universities in the state of North Carolina have higher standards than the NCAA minimum. I remember reading about this after our flirtation with Calipari.
UNC System Minimum Course requirements * English: 4 years * Social Studies: 2 years, including 1 year of U.S. history * Mathematics: 4 years, in any of the following combinations: o algebra I and II, geometry, and one unit beyond algebra II, o algebra I and II, and two units beyond algebra II, or o integrated math I, II, and III, and one unit beyond integrated math III. Students should have advanced math courses for serious consideration. * Science: 3 years, including 1 year of life or biological science and 1 year of a physical science; 1 must be a laboratory course * Foreign Language: 2 years of the same language required
NCAA minimum requirements (division one) 14 Core Courses: 4 years of English. 2 years of mathematics (Algebra I or higher). 2 years of natural/physical sci- ence (1 year of lab if offered by high school). 1 year of additional English, mathematics or natural/phys- ical science. 2 years of social science. 3 years of additional courses (from any area above, foreign language or nondoctrinal reli- gion/philosophy).
I believe the foreign language requirement was of particular concern to Calipari.

If I'm not mistaken, five of the six major conferences (and I know ECU isn't in one of the six) have the same or very similar requirements now.. The only lagging one is the SEC. An autistic and mildly retarded Dallas Baker won the NCAA Title last year for Florida. You can use that as a prime example. 9/7/2007 4:10:31 PM |

Is there a link somewhere that actually lists every conference's academic requirements? I'm surprised to see that the SEC is not up to the other five big conferences' academic snuff when I remember Spurrier's b****ing over the offseason at South Carolina.

So do ECU's academic requirements match ours or do we "go above and beyond"? We have five different standards that have been talked about in this thread: NCAA, ACC, the state of North Carolina, SEC, and ECU/C-USA's with nothing actually saying what the difference between the requirements in each conference/state/school/organizing body actually are. I'm just curious to see them written down what they are, they're always talked about but never expounded on.
