so i'm curious as to how serious this is. I had too much to drink Sat. night and since then my liver has been killing me on and off. It basically feels like when you eat way too much and your stomach hurts, except the feeling is much higher up (like right under the bottom of my ribs)
I tried doing research online, but it seems to all be alcoholics complaining about it after years and years of drinking. I've basically been drinking less than a year, and have only thrown up 2 times from doing so (one this past sat.) How serious is this and will it go away on its own? 9/11/2007 2:48:24 PM |

I'd guess that you are overreacting, but did you take any tylenol or other acetaminophen based products while drinking?
Quote : | "Alcohol-acetaminophen syndrome can cause acute liver failure. Transaminase, a liver protein, helps speed up metabolism, storage, filtration, and excretion in the liver. High transaminase levels, a characteristic of alcohol-acetaminophen syndrome, show that the liver is working overtime to metabolize both the alcohol and the acetaminophen, which is more than the liver can handle. The alcohol metabolizes at a higher rate, leaving "extra" toxic enzymes from the acetaminophen in the body's system. This excess of toxins, called "hepatotoxicity," can lead to acute liver damage or failure. Some health care providers speculate that alcohol-acetaminophen syndrome is the leading cause of acute liver damage in the United States." |

If you drink you really should switch to Ibuprofen based pain meds and still don't take them while you are drinking.9/11/2007 3:14:13 PM |

What beergolf said. It's acid reflux and it can make you miserable. Just drink lots of water and take it easy for the next few days, cowboy 9/11/2007 5:18:05 PM |

Skack - my sister is a doctor and tells me almost EVERY time she knows I'm drinking not to take anything with acetaminophen - and gives those same reasons.
Since I was a Freshman in college, and she was in med school she's been telling me this.
I don't know why it isn't common knowledge by now. 9/11/2007 5:28:35 PM |

yeah im sure the main problem is the following day i took some medicine that had aspirin in it. I always take Ibuprofen, but i just happened to take something with aspirin the following day. so milk thistle would help? i was thinkin about going to get some pepto bismol... 9/11/2007 5:59:22 PM |

You arent supposed to take tylenol (aceto.) if you drink 3 or more alcoholic beverages per day (implying you might be an alcoholic and have a weak liver). When you take tylenol, it strains the liver to process it and if you already have a weak liver due to drinking everyday, then you run into a problem
I take tylenol every time i get drunk just to cope with a hangover. But im only drunk like 2 or 3 times a month 9/11/2007 7:50:06 PM |

I'd still recommend taking something else if at all possible, at least don't take the Tylenol while a lot of alcohol is still in you.. 9/11/2007 7:59:39 PM |

I've read that people have actually had liver failure after taking Tylenol the next day to help with their hangover. I just avoid it alltogether if I've been drinking heavily or plan to drink within 24 hours of the Tylenol.
I just don't buy Tylenol at all. Go buy a 100 pack of Advil or Aleve from Wal-Mart, stick it in the fridge, and you'll be set for quite a while. 9/11/2007 8:35:38 PM |

^^NSAIDs are not necessarily safer for the liver than acetaminophen when you've been drinking. They have their own risk of hepatoxicity, as well as causing other problems with the gastrointestinal tract. Some of them have even been removed from the market due to causing heart problems. 9/11/2007 10:33:33 PM |

^^ I agree that they are terrible for your lower gastrointestinal, but most people don't take them often enough to have to worry about that. For your average user who happens to also drink I just think Ibuprophen is much safer.
I always warn people when I hear them talking about taking NSAIDs on a regular basis. It happens a lot with athletes trying to deal with inflammation and soreness on a daily basis. The medium/long term effects can be pretty nasty.

Just drink a shit ton of water before you go to bed.. I always wake up 3-4 hours after I go to sleep hungover as fuck and I'll chug all the propel that I can get down without puking and when I wake up a few hours after that I generally feel fine, without any other medicines. This method worked for 5/7 days a week for basically the entire summer with very high success 9/11/2007 11:59:32 PM |
