I predict ECU losing....

Their coach (in a year or two) after he realizes he can get paid twice as much and still recruit academic non-qualifiers at a bottom tier sec school, with the added bonus of not having to worry about all of the stds rubbing off on him.

Skip Holtz could become a UT candidate if Fulmer gets the axe like I think he will.

What does Jaybee think of Holtz I wonder.

Speaking of coaches on the rise, how long do you all think Jim Leavitt stays put? I know he claims "it's his dream job" but unless he gets a Krzyzewski type deal he is an idiot.

^ Why wouldn't he stay?

He is at a young program in Tampa in a BCS conference that with the right personnel he has a legitimate shot of winning every year. He has loads of high school talent in his state that will go to his school just cause all high schoolers want to go to winners.

Miami and Florida State are in decline so their competition for talent will be at par over time (in my opinion, Miami's decline is terminal, I don't think they'll ever return to their form of 5 years ago, they might be good enough to squeeze out a conference championship, but not enough to ever be national title contenders again, not to mention their fanbase does not exist unless they're ranked in the Top 5 nationally, so they don't make money on ticket revenue).

45000 people attend South Florida so there's a built-in fanbase that will only increase over time. The only thing that would make him leave is money, but I think USF would be smart enough to match if they play their cards right.

yeah, I don't see Leavitt leaving anytime soon... Tampa loves a winner, and he's providing one right now. He'll probably get his own stadium soon enough, if he finishes this year with a Big East title they might even name it after him...

I don't know where to find these. I just know how many players who have been recruited by and committed to State and Carolina and end up at EZU when they don't make the grades.

I don't know of a chart showing it, but Conf USA is allowed to accept partial qualifiers, whereas the ACC doesn't allow it.

(And the NCAA did away with the term 'partial qualifier' a few years back now using the sliding scale system, but I believe it still works about the same way. ECU lives off of players that couldn't qualify for other programs)

Still, they're ECU and this shouldn't be an excuse. Overall, we have a whole heckuva lot more advantages than them and should be whipping them every time we get the chance. (Same goes with Akron, Chuck)

^I can name a few on thier roster that committed to other programs and couldn't qualify...just off the top of my head

Jamar Bryant (Georgia)
Marcus Hands (UNC)
Khalif Mitchell (UNC)
Brandon Setzer (NCSU)

Edit: Mitchell is a little different. I think he actually played a year to two at UNC, didn't go to class, wasn't going to qualify, so he transferred to ECU.

These are just a few (of quite a bit I'm sure) that I know that actually committed to other schools.... many of their players not listed above were good enough to play for BCS conference schools, but weren't offered becuase they'd never qualify (Norman Whitley)

Saban just got into trouble, a-la Chuck Amato for this

http://www.al.com/sports/press-register/index.ssf?/base/sports/1191403352238360.xml&coll=3

Quote :
"Asked during his press conference how such non-traditional football powers became so competitive, Saban replied, "The distribution of players is not the same for everyone. We can't take props (partial qualifiers) in the SEC. They can't take them in the ACC. There's a significant amount of players who don't qualify, and they end up being pretty good players at some of these schools.

"I think there are six guys starting on South Florida's defense who probably could have gone to Florida or Florida State, but Florida and Florida State couldn't take them."

It's just that on this site I've read and it's been stated in the media that the State of North Carolina has higher standards than the NCAA standards, which would mean ECU and NC State would both have to meet it.

So based on logic, it would follow that there are NCAA standards, which are the bare minimum. The State of North Carolina (having to be followed by NCSU, UNC, and ECU and further Division I-AA and Division II teams) are higher than the NCAA standards. And that the ACC are then higher than the state's standards. People say that the ACC are higher than C-USA on academic standards, but ECU still has to meet the state's academic standards regardless of what C-USA does.

So, what is a partial qualifier, other than a Chuck Amato sound bite?

Also read on here that the SEC has the lowest academic standards of the BCS conferences (which to be honest, figures). But Saban now says that the Big East has lower standards than the SEC.

I'll do the best I can...anyone who knows more feel free to correct me if I'm way off.

The state of NC requires an extra math credit more than most other 'University of ENTER STATE NAME HERE' systems. This was going to be a problem for out of State kids whose High School systems didn't offer the extra math credit. I don't know how this has worked itself out, but apparently it hasn't become a huge issue. This says nothing about grades.... it just says they need X+1 amount of H.S. math credits instead of just X. Again, it's important to remember... this is just a credit-based requirement... not a grade requirement. I think they just have to pass.

As far as what a partial qualifier is... The NCAA (used to) say you had to meet 2 standards to be eligible: A minimum GPA and a minimum SAT score. A partial qualifier is a student who met one of the two. The NCAA minimums allow these students to be accepted and play ball on a 'probationary' basis, with the understanding that the student must perform well his first semester of school or he will lose eligibility. The ACC and all other BCS conferences (I believe the SEC as well) says you must meet both SAT and GPA requirements and do not allow these partial qualifiers even though the NCAA will allow you to do so as long as the student performs well his first semester in college

The NCAA did away with this a few years back and went with the sliding scale, which says that if a student has a 3.5 GPA, he only has to make an 800 on his SAT (I'm making these figures up so you get the point). If he has a 2.0 GPA, he might have to make a 1100 on his SAT. It's all relative. There still is a loophole around this that I haven't read into, but the same thing still happens even with the new 'sliding scale' NCAA rules

The reason ECU gets these players that don't fully qualify for the ACC is becuase they are told they must go to Hargrave or some other prep school to pull up their SAT score and ECU recruits them on the basis that they can come in and play right away. Many of them don't want to prep, so they sign with schools like ECU

^ exactly, why do we care about ezu? We have nothing to gain by playing them. If we win, we were supposed to, and if they win, we have to listen to their shit. Hell, we have to listen to their shit when they lose. Why would I go out of my way to see a game like that?

I've got one question for the fool who said that ^^ shit. Where are all of the ECU fans during basketball season? It seems like if you're such great fans, you wouldn't have a problem filling at least half of your gym when playing b-ball at home.

ecu has beaten UNC (on an end of game field goal) and houston. fucking powerhouses right there. i'd wager that wofford could beat either of those teams.

i'm not going to bullshit and say we're not having an awful season, but at least we can say this is just a rebuilding year. we have something to look forward to (see: top 25 recruiting class). wins over UNC and C-USA patsies are every year for you guys. BUT WATCH OUT FOR TULANE, MARSHALL AND UAB, I HEAR THEY'RE ON THE RISE. C-USA FOR BCS!!!

well being that in 6 seasons (starting with 2002) they've only scheduled your piss-ant football team twice, and the series is 1-1, its not exactly like you fucking dominate them. and since '02, we're 2-3 against them - we could end this season with a .500 record against the holes since 2002, JUST LIKE ECU.

but i certainly don't want use beating UNC as a measuring stick for success of a program. b/c lets face it, they've sucked for a while. so lets use facilities, recruiting, fan base, coaching and overall promise - i'd say, and most would agree, we throughly dominate each category.

i swear, you fuckers have an inferiority complex towards the ACC incomparable to any other in the NCAA. except maybe BC to, well, everyone.
