Hello all, I am about to buy my first Rover but I have many questions. I am torn between two different Rovers

1. 1998 Teal Rover
-145K
-Auto
-Only 1 window is not working
-Everything else works flawless
-Needs both valve cover gaskets and probably pads
-4.0
-$3300

2. 1995 Green
-140K
-5 Speed!
-AC not working, headliner hanging
-OME Heavy lift with 235/85
-3.9
-$3500

Now for the questions, which would you buy and why? Are the 5 speeds good or are they prone to break? I have thought about these Rovers over and over but, I just can't decide. Just trying to get your expert opinion. (Optimus Primer and Bigblueram please chime in)

Thanks, Jason

that is some high mileage for a rover.

but not all are bad.

our rover was good for us until the very end. the biggest job we did was install front shocks and an oil change, and the front shocks were easier than the oil change .

parts for these cars are expensive, but Oprimer hooked me up on some good deals.

he ended up buying the rover we had (i think cuz of tranny failure, but ask him) and fixed it up and i think has sold it.

hey are SOLID cars in the sense that they will and can go anywhere any other vehicle will go, and with confidence. of course i didnt go rock climbing, but i did rag out on the beach and in quite a few other places that put a toll on the thing.

i've got one big question before i go any further... have either of them had a valve job done, and how long ago? can the current owners document the service history of either one?

optmusprimer is really going to be able to tell you all the ins and outs of each one, but i can hopefully offer some advice based on your answer to those questions.

OKAY, first off, there are several different factors that would make or break the deal on these trucks, more so than I can begin to explain to you here. But I will do my best with what I have...

#1
- '98 was a good year, but that teal is hideous and 145k can be a lot depending on how well maintained the truck is
- window repair is likely $300
- never say everything works flawless. i bet i can find problems.
- valve cover gaskets are typical, and not cheap but not a dealbreaker on a D1
- pads alone are simple, but rotors complicate things quite a bit
- the 4.0s actual displacement is identical to that of a 3.9, just different (more modern and reliable) engine management
- $3300 isnt a bad price if you have $4.5k to spend, cause youll likely be in it for that much after purchase, repairs, tags, insurance, etc.

#2
- generally not a fan of the 94-95 models, and buying a lifted 5 speed truck that needs major work is not advisedp, especially for that price.

Optimus do you work on Rovers for a living? If so maybe you can check out the 98 for me. Of course I will pay you to do the repairs.

As for the money, I am willing to spend the extra money to get the kinks worked out. PM me if your intersted in working on it. AND I like the teal.

Dude, that shit is going to cost you an arm and a leg and maybe even a torso. DO NOT BUY.

'98 is a good year for a Discovery but the reason those things are so cheap is because they cost an arm and a leg to repair. You are buying someone else's problems. I'm sure you can find a better truck that might cost a little more and save a metric shit-ton of aggravation. I don't know much about RRC's, more of a Series/military fan myself.

We can help you find a better truck if you need.

As someone who paid too much for your first rover, dumped $$ into it (only to trade it for a fucking Jeep) and then has played the hot potato game with every truck since then, you should shut the fuck up Steve.

Haha, I've done pretty well... I haven't lost anything on any of the trucks I've had since the Disco. I've calmed down quite a bit and my next Series truck will be my last.

I saw that on (NC4x4), great truck but I find it intolerable from an operating cost standpoint (particularly fuel consumption). I'm really digging my new Series truck, I think I'll have this one for quite awhile.

^^land rover resale is HORRIBLE, save for defenders and series. they're not cheap to maintain, but really not any worse than other luxery brands. one upside to such poor resale is you can really get a lot of nice SUV for your money despite some of the upkeep costs.

^yeah, if i was to ever own a rover it would probably have to be a series or maybe a d110/109. i've come close to buying a couple of discoverys over the years, but purely for the price they could have been had for.

i sure hope your series steers better than the one i drove at the uwharrie safari, talk about slop and wandering...

^ you should really see this thing. Its tight and clean. I surprised even myself. Now all I have to do is get that dam pedal lever welded back so I can ship the 101 to Canada. Of all the stupid things to break.

btw how are ya doing Ivan? I saw the bus for sale on some board. Is that gone? Still got the Ram Charger?

^^most people call them toterhomes. mix between an RV and a heavy duty truck. the box has full living quarters, but it's got the drivetrain to tow about whatever i put behind it. the bus has served me well, but i want something just a little more refined and with more power.

^it's here, on nc4x4, and pirate. holler if you know anyone.

oh what, you thought police officers were supposed to have a higher level of standards, morals, etc.? not associate with people that street race, drunk drive, drift in public parking lots, assault people, spew racial slurs, or otherwise constantly break the law and suck at life?

Your right optimus if I stopped you I would ass rape you like I do everyone I stop. I'm just not an asshole when i do it.

Oh, and before you jump on the "cops only write tickets bs". I serve 40-50 warrants a month by myself. I get dope of all sorts every month (crack, powder, weed, pipes, stems, etc....). So just bc I'm friends with Will does not make me a bad person. I'm sure you have friends who fuck up, it happens! Do you think every cop has always been straight laced. You just want to hate on me bc it is the fad thing to do.

Fuck all the haters.

Oh and BBR I think you know alot about cars but, what is your problem? I pm u and optimus with a very serious question about rovers and I get BS and smart ass answers. And bc I'm friends with Will u hate me now?

I just don't understand, I don't even know you. The weird part I think you and Will would get along great. I've never met someone that is as cool to hang out with. And before you even come back with some fag comments, yes he is my lover and we butt fuck all the time. So bring the homo comments on. i understand that you guys are not secure in your manhood and you can't admit that you have a friend that is a guy. Optimus this goes for you too.

you better re read your pm's and this thread. i gave you solid answers/advice both places, AND offered to give my opinion on either truck in person at your request. i can't speak for whatever optmusprimer may have said to you via pm, but he definitely gave you a quality/educated initial response here.

if my post here and this pm are bs/smart answers, definitely don't bother to ask me for anything again.

as for you and slowblack being friends, i could care less. you're right, i don't know you... i don't have any opinion about you one way or the other. i just found it ironic that a police officer would be good friends with someone that brags about his drunk driving and other illegal escapades on a public message board.

i can assure you slowblack and i would get along about as well in person as we do on here. judging by all the stupid shit he's posted on here and hpj, it's plainly obvious he's not someone i would ever care to be associated with.

1. that guy wasn't drunk.

2. he wasn't being a ricer drifting around a parking lot.

3. he admitted that he made an honest mistake, you just started making excuses and quoting vin diesel.

there you go, you pretty much summed it up. it's been your choice to act like a cocksucker since you've been here, so you've been treated accordingly.
