it really sucks we had to spoil Hamels start. i think Moyer is the only starter with any postseason experience and he might not even get to pitch. but i sure am glad we don't have to see Eaton waste games any more.
btw I already am a fan of TBS' coverage...i really like the way Turner does sports. ANYTHING BUT FOX 10/3/2007 6:16:05 PM |

I didn't know where to put this because the old Marlins to NC thread was from 2005.
Quote : | "Charlotte is on the list of cities that the Florida Marlins are considering for relocation; team officials visited the city in early 2006 to discuss a move with city leaders and consider a plan to build a privately-funded stadium downtown. But city leaders stated as of April that they would not fund or support any attempt to bring the Florida Marlins to Charlotte. In May 2007, Nate Silver of Baseball Prospectus, after an exhaustive analysis of major league attendance and media markets in North America, concluded, "There is, to my mind, exactly one place that would clearly be viable for the 31st major league franchise, and that place is Charlotte, North Carolina. The South as a whole is underrepresented in the major leagues. . . . Charlotte is no metropolis, but it is conveniently located at the center of several mid-size markets, including the Winston-Salem/Greensboro/Raleigh-Durham corridor along I-40, and Columbia, South Carolina. What’s more, the area is growing rapidly, and would give both the Braves and the Nationals a natural rival in the NL East."" |
There any truth to all this? I know we had that thread where someone suggested Dorthea Dix old site here in Raleigh. Did this guy really say Charlotte was the best place? And if so Charlotte needs to pony up. I would love to have a team here in NC.10/3/2007 10:44:59 PM |

here's the BP article http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=6241, you have to be a subscriber of course
no city will want the marlins as long as loria is the owner
as much as i'd love to see it, NC would be a terrible place for a baseball team. most fans are loyal to their team, be it the braves, orioles, or even the reds i guess
we're in the middle of too many markets for a team to be a success here

nate silver is wacky anyways
if they move anywhere it'll be to vegas or portland

I don't really know about all that. Yeah they are loyal to their teams, but do they actually buy tickets and go? I doubt it. Baseball attendance is hardest because it is 81 games but look at the Canes. They play a lot of games and a sport that nobody really thought would do well in NC either. I think we could support a team. I would be a season ticket holder....once Im finally out of here for good that is. 10/3/2007 11:02:00 PM |
Ernie All American 45943 Posts user info edit post |
they canes are a bad comparison only because virtually no one in NC had any hockey loyalties before they moved in
i'm a die hard braves fan and i'd be at every game they played in charlotte, so would all the other braves, orioles, mets, dodgers, and twins fans
but you aren't gonna sell many season tickets packages in a market that's almost oversaturated by other markets
i'm no baseball economist, so i'm just talking out of my ass here, but it just doesn't seem that reasonable to me 10/3/2007 11:04:50 PM |

I really hope they eventually make the divisional series 7 games. For teams like the Cubs, Phillies, Angels, you play 162 and then lose one fucking game and your season is basically done unless you can win 3 out of 4 against a playoff team.
For the most part a 7 game series will allow the better team to prevail. 10/4/2007 2:03:46 PM |

^^^ How can you honestly believe that Rollins should not be an MVP candidate. You should read Jayson Stark's take on how historic Rollins's season was. I still would vote for Holliday because he carried his team into the playoffs, but Rollins would be a close second.
Wright/Fielder are out of the running due to their teams collapsing when it mattered most. 10/4/2007 4:13:18 PM |

Holliday is still a pretty easy choice (for me), historic season does not mean mvp season.
[Edited on October 4, 2007 at 4:22 PM. Reason : but for runner up I would go with J-roll, but only because wright and fielders teams missed playoffs] 10/4/2007 4:19:32 PM |

I like Rollins and would have no problems with him winning MVP... BUT his 2007 wasn't all that much better than Reyes' 2006. People go gaga over his HR total mainly but he plays in a Little League Park. 11 of his 30 HRs were on the road. 19 were in CBP, which is a freaking joke of a park.
His OBP was mediocre for a leadoff hitter and his defense is slightly above league average, though it was better this year then it has been in the past.

^Thank you.
Look at Rollins numbers pre 2006 and tell me again that he is a power hitter. That stadium is a joke and the reason that 200 K/a year man Ryan Howard stole a MVP from Pujols last year.
People give Holliday and any Rockie shit because of Coors....guess what stadium had the most home runs hit in it this year? Philly.
[Edited on October 4, 2007 at 4:30 PM. Reason : .344 on base doesn't cut it] 10/4/2007 4:29:17 PM |

In Howard's defense he had an awesome average and OBP last year too...
this year his average was horrible and he is quickly turning in to Cecil Fielder reincarnate. Seriously, any dumb caveman can swing a bat and pray he makes contact. He hits a ton of HRs but the motherfucker K'd in 1/3 of his plate appearances.. that is absurd.
Last year Reyes had 19 HRs. He had 3 in one game in CBP, all of which were warning track pop-ups in Shea. That's evidence enough to me that Rollins season, while great, wasn't as historical as people make out..
[Edited on October 4, 2007 at 4:32 PM. Reason : Play in Petco in SD and he probably is lucky to hit 15.] 10/4/2007 4:31:00 PM |
