how the fuck does a 20 year old become a sheriffs deputy???? this just blows my mind, usually police academies prefer college educations or military training. No way he could have had enough of either of these at 20 year's old to warrant being a deputy. whoever hired him should be accountable for this shit.

i'm sure deputydog or theduke or whoever will come to his defense, claiming that all sheriff and police officers are highly trained and college educated and everything. But I still contend that apart from big cities, there is just not enough highly educated and trained people to fit the demand for sheriff's and police. Small-town cops are stereotyped to be dumb hicks, and while it might not be that bad, there is some truth to that. Why would a college educated and academy trained officer go back to rural NC or Wisconsin to be a traffic cop with the occasional B&E to get paid as much as a public school teacher? Those departments have to hire whoever they can get.

At least the cops settled up with him.

works for me

i can undersdtand the shortage of educated personnel, but i dont think, at the very minimum, that it would be too much to put an age limit on being a licensed gun carrying member of the government. 20 is way too young to give some kid a gun and ask him to uphold the law.

some states allow police as young as 18, in NC the minimum age to be a cop is 21. As for this guy, he is scum just like any other criminal. This is not an example of police acting inappropriately on duty or brutality, this is an example of a nut case snapping and killing innocent people. So happens he slipped through the cracks somewhere and was hired as a cop. This unfortunately happens sometimes and brings shame to all police officers, especially since he not only killed civilians but also shot at his fellow officers. this guy is a disgrace.

^ invalid comparison. An 18 year old will be lead by a 25ish squad leader and a 30 - 35ish platoon sergeant. This is somewhat different from a 20 year old acting independently as a police officer.

This is why myself, and many others, aren't willing to disarm ourselves with the promise that the police will protect us.

Most smaller and even medium sized cities only require that you have a HS diploma, can pass a physical, drug test, and pass a lie detecter test. I graduated HS in a semi big town, about 80k and its amazing the complete fucks I went to school with that are now cops.

This guy was a nut. According to this article he wasn't required to be psychological screened and he snapped because they called him a 'worthless pig'

if you cant take being called a worthless pig you have no place as a cop.....i have been called sooo many names and insults as a cop i cant even count, you have to have thick skin. this kid clearly had problems and was not psychologically capable of being a cop (obvious statement i know).

my personal favorite name i have been called was "doofus" and some runner ups are, and i quote..

"beetlejuice"
"the dinosaur from mario brothers the movie"
"shrink um up head"
"no head"
"big ugly mother fucker"

I was reading one of the articles about this and it listed the ages of the people killed--20, 20, 18, 18, 18, 14. I'm kind of wondering what a 14 year old girl was doing hanging out with 3 18 year old girls and 2 20 year old guys. Seems a little odd.

But obviously this guy was unfit for duty as a cop, or evidently, to be any sort of productive member of society, since a verbal altercation turned into "gun down everyone in the room". While I do agree that, at least as a general guideline, 21 is probably a good minimum age for a police officer, I don't know if that extra year would have made a difference for this guy. Now maybe a psychological screening would have--those should *definitely* be required. I think the article I read said something to the effect of 40 states require them already for prospective LEO's...maybe this will prompt the other 10 to remedy their situations.

I think the kid's too young to be a cop, but it's a leap to say that contributed to this incident. Dude was just plain crazy...

I know that plenty of cops are well-trained, but we all have that friend who got drunk and blew a hole in his floor fucking around with his dad's gun when he was 13...and somehow that guy always ends up with a badge...

Statements like this that Republician18 made " except we risk our lives everyday to protect ungrateful civilians like your dumb ass"
Are the reason we need to pay the police alot more money so we can get a bigger pool of people to choose from thus a better grade of law enforcement officer and thus eliminating ignorant asses like Republican18 off the Police force.....and have them loading garbage trucks like their IQ matches them up with....

I think Police officers, Fireman, and Teachers should be the highest paid people....all 3 professions need to get a bigger pool of people to choose from and raise the level of quality in each profession and if we raised the pay level significantly more people would go after those career paths. If we did that instead of playing gangster ball players millions of dollars our society would benefit immensely...in my opinion.

If teachers, fire fighters, police officers were paid the same as baby sitters, we would all make over 60k a year.

This is a terrible and moronic thing to say. From an educator viewpoint: This implies that people in the public service profession are poor quality and/ or ingnorant. There is an extremely high quality of educators, but lots of apathy from the public. Paying teachers more, just to encourage higher quality people, makes you look like an asshole. The people who have these jobs really care, and work for pennies to try and better everyones life, and teach the future.

Yes, there are exceptions, as in every thing in life.

im a cop, and therefore i am an immature, uneducated racist hick who only does this job because it was all i could get and it gives me a chance to feel like a big man. i dont do this job out of a genuine desire to help and defend people, or to try and save lives through pro-active patroling. i dont care about getting dangerous people off the streets or helping to find lost children, or responding to car accidents to save lives...nope, im only here because this was all i could get with my GED, and i didnt want to work in McDonalds.

not to mention, the comparison to "gangster ball players" is irrelevant and inaccurate, for several reasons. Now I'll be the first in line to say that ball players, actors and the like certainly don't "deserve" the amount of money they get, especially compared to the value they contribute to society overall.

but the forces in play to pay those people and civil servants are vastly different. "we" don't pay ball players, at least not as such. Ball players and actors work more or less on supply and demand. Fortunately for them, there is a relatively small supply of them at the elite level, and there is obviously a huge demand for people to watch them do their job and who are willing to pay for it. When a movie comes out and people collectively pay $50M in 2 days to go see it, or 100,000 people fill a stadium and pay $150 each to watch 30 men throw a leather ball, where would you suggest all the money goes? To the owners/producers? then you accuse them of being greedy. To the players/actors? then you accuse them of being overpaid.

Athletes/actors are in the very fortunate situation that their "services" can "supply" a very large population. Civil servants like policemen, firemen and teachers, are 1) paid directly by the government and therefore are subject to lots of social and governmental forces, and 2) can only effectively "supply" a relatively small population. The demand is high, the supply is relatively high, but since it's not an open market, the employer (the government) has a monopoly on what they pay. If you think they should all be paid more, then don't complain when politicians try to raise your taxes, and hope that they quit wasting money. (note: i'm not advocating privatizing things like schools and police forces, i'm just saying there's always a reason people get paid whatever amount for what they do)

I still stand by the fact that I think that Police Officers, Firefighters, and Teachers should be paid much much much more than they are now.....and I believe it would bring more quality people to those professions. Not to say anyone in any of these 3 professions is not up to snuff..(other than guys like Rep18) who come on here and say they are police officers and make ignorant comments......but why not improve things....that is all I am saying..

They should be paid what they're worth. In some cases that would be more and in some cases that would be less than now. Unions don't like pay for performance so the good ones are underpaid and the screwups are overpaid.
