Johnny Thomas needs to be careful.
If he keeps acting like that he could quickly become a fan favorite over the next 5 years. Seems very well mannered and like he'll be a great team player. 10/10/2007 3:06:43 PM |

Quote : | "No Nodding Off As NCSU's Lowe Addresses Sports Club N.C. State Sports Logo
By Dane Huffman
Posted: Today at 4:54 p.m. Updated: 26 minutes ago
When Herb Sendek spoke to the Raleigh Sports Club, he could be bland as the meat loaf.
Heads didn’t nod in approval; they just tended to nod off.
That wasn’t the case Wednesday, when current N.C. State basketball coach Sidney Lowe went before the group at the Highland United Methodist Church.
There were several hundred in attendance, and red shirts aplenty, as Lowe took the podium. The energy in the room was clearly different as Lowe talked about an upcoming Wolfpack team that returns four starters and includes a strong recruiting class. State finished 20-16 last season with a rotation that leaned heavily on its five starters.
The Pack will be much deeper this year, and Lowe, in his second season, is clearly pleased with what he has seen of the new players. The freshman class, led by 6-foot-9 All-America J.J. Hickson, should have an impact.
“You’re really going to like him. I really like him,” Lowe said as the room chuckled. “He did a move yesterday at practice. I said, ‘Did you all see that move?’ Coach [Quentin] Jackson said, ‘No, did you see your face drop?’”
Lowe also called 6-7 freshman forward Tracy Smith “a big-time scorer.” But where State will need an impact from the new players early on is at point guard, where Engin Atsur was a senior last season.
Javy Gonzalez, a 6-foot freshman, is out six to 10 weeks with a thumb injury.
“I told Javy if it were me, it’d be three to four,” Lowe quipped.
Farnold Degand, a 6-4 transfer from Iowa State, may get the first shot at point guard, but Lowe said Degand is more of a point guard who also looks to score.Gonzalez and Marques Johnson, a 6-5 transfer from Tennessee, are more point guards who favor the pass first. Johnson will eligible in December.
More talent is on the way. State has two commitments from high school seniors (point guard Julius Mays and shooting guard C.J. Williams) and is pursuing two other top prospects. State also has a commitment from young prospect C.J. Leslie of Holly Springs.
Regardless of who plays for State, one of the reasons Wolfpack fans are so enamored with Lowe his clear passion for the school. Sendek won games and recruited good players, but he never stirred the fan base’s emotion the way Lowe can.
That was evident again Wednesday when Lowe discussed wearing State’s red and white.
“We talked about that all year long, what it meant to play for that jersey,” Lowe said. “You don’t play for the name on the back of that jersey but the one on the front of that jersey.”
Lowe isn’t afraid to acknowledge State’s rivals, either. Sendek, after a crushing home loss to North Carolina two years ago, seemed to shrug it off as just another game.
Not so for Lowe, who debuted his red jacket for the home game with UNC last season, an emotional win for the Pack.
Lowe is quick to tell his players that the games with Carolina and Duke have added significance, for the program and for State fans.
“I came here in 1979 and guess what? It’s still a big game,” Lowe said. “So embrace that.”
So far, Wolfpack fans have clearly embraced Lowe as he looks to rebuild the program.
NEWS AND NUGGETS: N.C. State will play in Hawaii next season, Lowe said Wednesday. He also said State is having conversations with UCLA, Kentucky and Florida about future games.
While Lowe didn’t want to say as much, the fact that the Wolfpack is looking for high-profile opponents is an indication of where he thinks the program is headed in future seasons. Coaches with down programs look for weak opponents; teams on the rise look for challenges.
GETTING THE JOB: Lowe made an interesting point about getting the job at State. He said he and athletics director Lee Fowler would have different conversations about potential coaches, many of whom eventually turned the Wolfpack down.
“It really bothered me. I said to Lee Fowler, ‘These guys really don’t understand the opportunity they’d have at N.C. State. This is one of the best basketball programs in the country,’” Lowe said.
“Then one day we were talking and Lee said, ‘What about you? What’s your situation?’ I said, ‘Oh … Let me check.’”
ON SLOAN: While Lowe is asked often about playing for Coach Jim Valvano at State, he also had fond memories of Coach Norm Sloan, who recruited him to State but who left after Lowe’s freshman year for Florida.
Lowe said he went to see Sloan to tell him he was going to Florida as well.
“He told me I couldn’t go,” Lowe recalled. “He said, ‘I recruited you for N.C. State. N.C. State is the best place for you. You stay here and you’ll be fine.’”
Of course, Sloan was right. Lowe was the point guard for the amazing Wolfpack team that won the 1983 NCAA title." |

I don't consider myself overly optimistic at all, but that 9-7 prediction is crazy. The ACC will have another down year, and State looks pretty decent, but he still has us at 9-7 and like 5th? 10/11/2007 10:29:26 AM |
