I have a computer, I've added a sound card to it so that I'm not using the onboard audio. The front ports for microphone and headphones do not work. Any ideas? gateway is telling me the ports are bad but i doubt that very seriously.

Think i may have figured it out, i probably have to disconnect it from the motherboard and connect it to the sound card itself.

front ports would have to be connected to the new sound card. being gateway, connector is prolly proprietary so more or less SOL.

^--didnt finish reading, but yeah nail -> head etc.

if you get a multimeter, you could check the pins on the cable that runs from the motherboard to the front panel for the ground, mic, left and right channels and connect them to the new sound card

or just run cables out the back from the new sound card, through the case, terminating at the old connectors either replacing the jacks that were connected to the motherboard or soldering the cables to the old connectors

i hadn't thought about that 2nd method, running from the back through the case, seems like too much cabling though, i'm gonna try method 1, in any event, would i be able to just strip the wire down and kinda hook it up or would i need a connector? (i know what i should do, but i'm curious as to what will at least work)
