The letter is signed by 41 Democrats and requests Clear Channel to "censure' Rush for his comments regarding "phony soldiers." He's donating the proceeds to the The Marine Corps - Law Enforcement Foundation.

^^ what the hell do you think is the purpose of the letter. It's a "hey you shouldn't say that! MOMMY MAKE HIM STOP SAYING THAT!"
That is attempting to censor someone.
^ Because people validate him by drafting letters by 41 senators. If he wasn't effective and wasn't a force to be reckoned with, he would be ignored... you know, kind of like Al Franken.

And we also see how well that worked out. The CEO of Clear Channel GAVE Limbaugh the letter to do this with... because Talk Radio is still a bastion for free speech and people like him obviously subscribe to the fact that it is absolutely weak to try to stop someone like Limbaugh from voicing his opinion.

He has to be one of the most unbelievably ignorant people on the radio, not because I disagree with him, but simply because he is an incompetent debater, posesses little to no understanding of anything he pontificates on, utter hypocrite, and simply drops calls when he can't handle debate.
That being said, I'd like to think that United States Sentators wouldn't make it their business to demand the censure or censoring (whatever you prefer) of private citizens.10/12/2007 2:59:39 PM |

A public official asking a private firm to punish one of its employees for something they said is pretty much asking for censorship. The idea is to get him to stop saying what he wants to say. Which is censorship.
I mean i cant stand Rush but its pretty offensive that the democrats would do this. Especially since what they said about him was taken out of context explicitly for the purpose of attacking him instead of what he was saying.
The democrats are the party of total fucking failure. They cant do a goddamn thing in congress because they're completely incompetent or more concerned with the 08 election than doing what they were put there to do.
So here are your choices 1) a party thats going to fuck you, send you the bill, and do whatever the fuck it wants. 2) a party thats going to unwittingly do what the other party wants and then complain because they were too dumb to figure it out. 10/12/2007 3:21:32 PM |

I too gotta hand it to Rush on this one. he just let the Dems hang themselves with their own rope. and asking the signers to match funds was a nice twist of the knife.
...
but what I'm going to take away from all this, is the funniest part -- that Oeuvre got called out for not knowing the difference between censure and censor, and then his failed attempts to play it off like he does.

I would have been different had the 41 Democrats demanded a retraction from Rush... That's within their right to do. But going to their superior asking for punishment if an apology is not given is something quite different.

For the record, the Dems letter to Clear Channel was a stupid move, and I stated as such when I created this thread. It's not their job to tell Clear Channel what their employees can and can't say. Let public outrage do the job for you, b/c THAT is what matters to the media - ratings.
Quote : | "Rush Limbaugh didn't even say anything bad. What he said was taken completely out of context, and the democrats know this." |
I disagree. Here's the transcript:
http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_092607/content/01125113.guest.html[/link]
Quote : | "CALLER: I'm one of the few that joined the Army to serve my country, I'm proud to say, not for the money or anything like that. What I would like to retort to is that, what these people don't understand, is if we pull out of Iraq right now, which is not possible because of all the stuff that's over there, it would take us at least a year to pull everything back out of Iraq, then Iraq itself would collapse and we'd have to go right back over there within a year or so.
RUSH: There's a lot more than that that they don't understand. The next guy that calls here I'm going to ask them, "What is the imperative of pulling out? What's in it for the United States to pull out?" I don't think they have an answer for that other than, "When's he going to bring the troops home? Keep the troops safe," whatever.
CALLER: Yeah.
RUSH: It's not possible intellectually to follow these people.
CALLER: No, it's not. And what's really funny is they never talk to real soldiers. They pull these soldiers that come up out of the blue and spout to the media.
RUSH: The phony soldiers.
CALLER: Phony soldiers. If you talk to any real soldier and they're proud to serve, they want to be over in Iraq, they understand their sacrifice and they're willing to sacrifice for the country.
RUSH: They joined to be in Iraq." |
The underlined parts are the key. Rush doesn't correct this caller's assertion that "all real soldiers support the war." The caller makes a blanket statement that liberals never speak with "real soldiers," and Rush proceeds to call them "phony soldiers."
I'm sorry, but in the context of the conversation, Rush is supporting the concept that liberals only talk to fake soldiers, and that no real soldier is against this war... despite the fact that his previous caller was a former soldier and was in favor of withdrawing.
That level of ignorance is staggering.

i hate to be in the position of defending Rush Limbaugh...
but after reading the entire segment, not just the few lines out of context, i think it was pretty clear he was referring to a few notorious cases where certain people who lied about being in Iraq -- or even in the military at all -- were going around telling the media they had witnessed all sorts of atrocities. these people became the darlings of the extreme left wing antiwar groups, until they were exposed.
this whole thing with the letter was a big fucking mistake, at every conceivable level. the Dems need to man up and admit it.
and the 40-some odd senators should -- as a group -- match Rush's donation. If not to the same charity, then to a similar military family advocacy group

See I disagree. They key is the follow-up after the "phony soldier" insert by Rush. Not all REAL soldiers favor staying Iraq. Rush should have corrected him, but didn't. In this case its a lie of ommission. I'm not saying he deserves to be fired, fined, or disciplined in any way. I AM saying that he deserves the criticism.
However, the Dems committed a much more egregious error in sending that letter. It was a silly move and i have no sympathy for them in regards to Rush masterfully spinning this lame effort in his favor. This is the kinda BS on the Dems part drives me up a wall. This is why I continue to have no interest in supporting either major political parties...10/15/2007 5:16:20 PM |

Rush deserves a lot of criticism for a lot of things.
and i see the point youre making, but i dont think it's at all clear that comment was referring to soldiers who criticise the administration. maybe there was a bit of ambivalence initially, but he almost immediately made sure to clarify that he was talking about real incidents where people posed as special forces, and then were prosecuted for impersonation.
its one thing to go after someone who really says what the Dems accused him of, but that they took something so loosely out of context and made it into a freaking Congressional Issue like they did, is just insane.
I can not believe that they hung themselves out to dry like that. It's just embarrassing. I mean, it's totally hooksaw-esque, and I would expect a higher standard from the US Senate.
I mean, forgetting all else, certainly they knew the CEO of ClearChannel is a huge GOP supporter and friend of Limbaugh. what the fuck did they think was going to happen??

^ of course the congress is usually the place for level headed intelligent discourse. Like the attempt to get Turkey to pull what little support they have given us in Iraq. The only "phonies" are the congressmen that profess to support the troops yet worry more about moveon.org and poll numbers then the safety and success of the troops. Bush should have questioned their patriotism years ago now. Look what his appeasement has earned him, no support and a prolonged war, take off the gloves and call a spade a spade. His steadfast determination is useless w/o a more active counter-propaganda campaign against his power hungry political foes. It's bully pulpit, you gotta use it. Ok, i'm done. 10/16/2007 11:28:19 PM |
