My question, and this is a very serious question, is what do I give her for a wedding present. She's seen and done more than most can only hope to see or do in a lifetime, so I'm not going to get her a fucking toaster. It's been a long time since she's been married; probably at least 30 years. One of my best friends (a girl mind you) suggested that I buy a large tube of KY Jelly and a card that says "You Kids Have Fun." If anyone can suggest something clever in the next two days, I'm definitely buying and giving the present. Be seriious, as the best idea will indeed result in me giving her that present this weekend. 10/18/2007 12:57:14 AM |

i imagine there are a lot of people in your situation. Shouldn't she have given some guidance to the guests as to what kind of stuff they want/need? Did she say anything like "look, we;'re 78 years old. seriously, we don't need anything" 10/18/2007 8:45:56 AM |

Don't get her KY. Get her silicone lube. Target sells some for $9, and it's incredible.
Gardening/hobby stuff is good. Treat this less like a wedding, and more like Christmas. Wedding gifts are so often things to help a new couple get started, establish a household, and the like. at 78, she doesn't need more linens or kitchen items. Cash always goes over well.

When my grandfather got married two or three years ago, he simply said "We do not want presents. The two of us already have way too much stuff. Your present to us should be your presence over the weekend, and the help you've already given with the wedding. Do not buy us anything." So he got cash from most folks.10/18/2007 10:01:40 AM |

Kramer: That's pretty good, huh?
Jerry: Great.
Kramer: Remember when we were standing there and she mentioned it? I made a mental note of it.
Jerry: Well goody for you.
Kramer: Oh yeah, I'm very sensitive about that. I mean, when someone's birthday comes up, I keep my ears open. So what'd you get her?
Jerry: 182 bucks.
Kramer: Cash? You gotta be kidding. What kind of gift is that? That's like something her uncle would get her. " |

When my grandma remarried, we gave them a gift certificate to the local Japanese steakhouse. So this cute old couple went in & sat down at the big table, said they just got married, everyone made a huge deal out of it and they had such a great time that they ask for the same thing for Christmas every year (they got married at New Year's). Congrats to her for finding happiness again (especially if he's 25 ) 10/19/2007 4:23:23 PM |

When +\- baby boomers get married, it's because they enjoy each others company (perhaps are in love as well) and want to have a socially acceptable reason for sharing a room when they go on trips.

Yeah, it is creepy to ask about someone's grandma
It turned up in some search I did and was really surprised by the title (a 78 year old getting married). Read the thread and was touched by the OP's post, and naturally got curious about how she was doing. How horrible of me! 12/12/2015 11:58:15 PM |

She absolutely enjoyed her marriage! In fact, grandpa had had a high school crush on her for about 60+ years so needless to say they were well-acquainted with one another and about the same age. We still refer to her husband as grandpa, who was one of a dozen people at my small wedding a few years ago. I believe it is his intentions to be buried alongside her when he passes away down the road. 12/14/2015 2:44:22 PM |
