For some reason, I can't get my surround sound to work on my xbox 360 elite.
I have the video from the 360 being passed through the receiver via hdmi and the sound
being passed via component cables through the receiver. It's frustrating because I'm pretty sure
Halo 3 is SS but it only plays in the 3 front speakers. What's worse is that I just got Transformers on HD DVD and purchased the hd dvd player for the 360 and I can't get the movie to play in 5.1! Can anyone help?!?

The 360 only outputs 5.1 over hdmi and optical. It sound like a optical connection would be best for your setup.

i assume by "component cables" you mean RCA audio... component is for video

surround sound can't go over RCA... it only transmits left and right.

you need an optical switcher.

yeah and if your receiver is over a year old it probably can't pull 5.1 over hdmi either

The HDMI cable carries the audio signal also (in 5.1 when available). Learn to use your receiver.

Halo 3 (and most XBOX 360 games) are Dolby Digital. In fact every audio signal output from the xbox over a digital connection (optical or HDMI) should be converted to Dolby Digital (I don't know why it does this because you lose audio quality on HD DVDs converting lossless encoded audio with a lossy codec).

and if the above ^ is right and your receiver does not support DD over HDMI, then your only option is optical. maybe your receiver doesn't support Dolby Digital at all. What format does the PS3 use?

they currently use a format that's $100 cheaper, but will quickly turn around and move to another once current stock sells out.
