Anybody got an old boat/atv/motorcycle/snowmobile gas tank they would be willing to part with? Really need a fuel cell for a demo derby car.

wal-mart. that's where i've gotten them for my cars. don't forget you'll need the quick release fuel line fittings too per the rules. i'm going to assume you know how the line has to be run, an enclosure/shield for the cell, etc...
west marine/boaters world will have them too, but for a lot more $$.
so are you running at the fair this weekend or what?

yeah we're running Sunday(assuming we get the car ready)
we were just trying to get this done as cheap as posible

okay... you realize there may or may not be heat races on sunday, right? it just depends on the number of cars that come out as to whether or not they do heats before the championship. so, unless you've won a heat or main event at another fair this year OR win one of the heats this weekend you won't be running (that's what gets you into the championship).
i would definitely reccomend trying to get it ready in time for the saturday night event, if not the afternoon one if you can. usually, they will have at least one heat for each class on sunday... but it's not guaranteed.

i hear ya, that's the name of the game... there may be $600 total in my three cars, including purchase price. i feel like some of these guys that have started dumping big money into built motors, etc. are ruining some of the fun of it.
if you haven't gotten them yet, wal-mart is also a great place for your battery box and battery terminals. they sell some neat quick release terminals that are worth the extra $$ i've come to learn. makes taking the battery in/out of the car for charging easier or swapping in fresh batteries, disconnecting in the event of an electrical fire (which i could have really used last year), etc.
also, do not waste your money on high dollar low awg wire for the relocation. buy a set of cheap ass jumper cables at wal mart also and cut the ends off.
if you have any questions or need any other advice on getting it ready, just ask.

just drill a hole in the floor somewhere behind the driver/passenger seat within the vicinity of the tank and run them up there. by driver's compartment, they mean like in the area where you sit, the passenger side, etc... not the whole car.
you also have to sleeve the line where it comes through the sheetmetal. a rubber grommet, larger bit of fuel line/coolant hose, etc. works fine. you can run the line in the car for short distances from where it comes through the floor to the tank, but they'll want to see it covered with something. screwing down an old floormat or piece of carpet over it are fine, you usually have this around from stripping anyway. 10/18/2007 7:33:53 PM |

i found a good example... here's where the tank sits in our buick (minus the shield of course):
here you can see where the fuel line comes up (notice the floormat that's folded back off of it, it's just anchored with some self tapping screws):
another couple of notes on tanks, etc.:
1. depending on the location and if it's metal, you may be better served to leave the stock tank in if you haven't already removed it. this is legal, you just have to drill a few holes in the bottom of it.
2. make sure you strap the tank down WELL and secure the shield WELL. if you think it's good enough, add more just to be safe. in one heat last year i was stopped from running in the middle of it because i was hit hard enough to sheer the scews out of my shield and break the strap on the tank. it did it again in another heat and ripped the fuel line off, but i was able to crawl around with the starter until i got it hooked back up. luckily the officials didn't notice the loose shield/tank.
besides it being a crappy reason to be dq'd in a heat, it is NOT a good feeling to have gas splashed on you from a fuel tank flying around inside a backfiring, sparking, hotter than hell car.
