Can anyone recommend a good volkswagen repair shop? All the dealers are booked and I have a problem that needs to be repaired this week.
I'll go ahead and describe it in case someone has some ideas... This problem is very intermittent - has only happened twice in the past 3 weeks. I can try to start the car and it just turns over and over without catching. Then after several times trying, it finally catches and revs up to 30k or more! No engine lights come on - it seems the computer thinks everything is ok. If I turn it off and try again, it might do the same thing but if I switch gears, it immediately dies. After about 7 minutes of panic, it finally starts properly and runs as if nothing was wrong....

its 30x100 Most german cars i've seen have their RPM's displayed in multiples of 10 which means you multiply it by 100 not 1000 lol
also the place i buy my Super blue from is supposed to be a good VW shop. I forget the name but its near peace st and Capitol Blvd.

yes, good point about the RPM.... I obviously know nothing about cars.
Forgot to add that my emissions light does come on every now and then at random (not coinciding with the above behavior)....

i'm one of the owners of a local shop.. the number is 919-231-0094
is it a cold-start issue? does it do it if the car is warm?

does it "warm" - only ever done it a couple of times, once after it had been turned off for ~15 minutes and another time when it had been off for 1.5 hr 10/22/2007 2:24:49 PM |

you may still have an intermittent code stored without the CEL/MIL coming on. 10/22/2007 3:30:39 PM |

Dealing with dealerships is a nightmare. Doing struts on a jetta the other week we gave them a vin # and still got the wrong strut mounts. Took about a week and a half to get the parts. Then there's the stupid sealed transmission system that requires specific temperatures to properly add fluid, etc. We can and do work on them.. its just a nightmare dealing with parts and service procedures. 10/22/2007 11:10:12 PM |

Every automatic transmission has a specified temp at which to check the fluid level. Do you work on Ford Explorers? Or anything with a 5R55 trans? I bet you do but when a Jaguar comes in with the same transmission youd bitch about it requiring special procedures.10/22/2007 11:40:19 PM |

I'm not talking about a specific temperature for checking fluid levels. I'm talking about the specific drive cycle required to add/flush transmission fluid. 10/23/2007 4:55:26 PM |

West German garage is the best around hands down. Non dealer and their forte is in VW'S. 10/23/2007 11:27:05 PM |

Check Crossroads Euro out on 55/54 in Durham. They used to do a lot of my VW work. The one reason I am hesitant to ever again own a Dub is service. Dealers suck and good indys are hard to come by. Much better with Benz
As far as the problem, sounds like maybe a dirty intake or EGR. Does it only happen when cold and get better as it warms up? My former 87 Jetta used to do this. Needed the intake manifold removed and cleaned.
