It makes me sad that such a good movie is so vastly under-appreciated.

I hate trying to introduce Firefly to people who have never heard of it.

Me: "It's kind of like a western/sci-fi with bits of humor worked in"
Them: "Sounds pretty stupid"

Great show and great movie. Have there been any other good "Space Westerns" or is it the only one of note?

yeah, that's been coined (either ironically, or coincidentally), the "Buffy Effect"
http://syfyportal.com/news423264.html
Even though Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a popular and long-running show on WB/UPN, it was certainly never a mainstream success, mostly because it is a silly-sounding and pretty geeky. When you describe the premise of shows like Firefly, Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (all from Joss Wheadon), and others like Battlestar Galactica, people think they are either geeky sci-fi shows, or teenage girly shows. Unfortunately, it takes a lot to convince people just to give one or two episodes a try, but usually that is enough to get them hooked.

I had to overcome the "Buffy Effect" a couple years ago, when my wife came back from a trip where she started watching Buffy with some girl-friends of hers. She came back and told me about it (this was in 2004, already after it had gone off the air) and i was like "what.... the hell are you talking about. that show's for high school girls". But I caved and watched a season, and now have seen the entire Buffy and Angel series' twice. In fact, just last night I came home a little late and my wife had put in in Buffy S1 E1 DVD, and wants to start the series over again.
Even after watching all of Buffy and Angel, but wife, this time, had a hard time getting over the "Buffy Effect" when I told her about FireFly. She, like most women (or people in general) thought it was a silly sounding premise, and the only reason she agreed to watch it was because it was done by Wheadon. Needless to say, she's now a big fan.

Dude, buy the collector's edition of Serenity... it's totally worth it. And I've read that a sequel is definitely going to be made now that the DVD sales are skyrocketing again. It took me 3 weeks just to get a copy from Amazon.com because they kept getting backstocked.

I'd really recommend buying a copy if you don't have one, and if you don't, buy one for a friend

I suppose that is a testament to Joss Whedon's skill as a writer. He can take the shittiest-sounding premise, and spin it into gold. A good writer can come up with a good premise from the start, but It takes real talent and creativity to start with crap and still tell a good story. I had my doubts about Buffy and Firefly, but I'm glad that I've watched them.
