Quote : | "To be clear: Barack will support a filibuster of any bill that includes retroactive immunity for telecommunications companies." |
Clinton is now the only Democratic presidential candidate in the senate that has yet to say she will block ANY legislation granting the telecoms immunity in any criminal proceedings stemming from the illegal wiretapping scandal.
Richardson, although he isn't in the senate, had this to say:
Quote : | "Like most of his promises, President Bush's inauguration day pledge to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution has been folded away and forgotten. From torture to secret prisons and wiretapping, this administration systematically has stripped away or ignored many of the most basic rights and principles upon which this nation was founded.
This unprecedented assault on American laws and values, cloaked falsely and irresponsibly in the guise of national security, must be stopped.
Incredibly, the Senate stands on the verge of abetting another Presidential outrage by considering a bill that would grant immunity to telecommunications companies that admitted to assisting the government in spying on American citizens by disclosing personal information. This bill must not pass. " |
Would you vote for somebody who let this slide? Is it a dealbreaker, a major issue, a minor one, or not a concern at all? What do you think it says of the candidates that it has taken so long to get any final answer regarding this legislation (aside from Dodd and Biden, who were very prompt to say they'd block it)?
In short, if a Democrat is unwilling to stop this type of legislation, are they any better than the administration we're saddled with now?10/25/2007 10:23:29 AM |

I don't care if yuou a Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Bull-Moose... I expect rational people to stand against a bill that makes us less American and more like the enemies we're fighting. 10/25/2007 1:59:43 PM |

Umm, I'm not sure what is stupid about labeling, partially in jest, the state of federal politics an oligarchy. 10/25/2007 2:03:40 PM |

i am certainly not for granting these companies blanket immunity, but I also wouldn't say we should prosecute every single company that cooperated with the gov't. I would be for looking at it on a case-by-case basis as needed. 10/25/2007 8:15:21 PM |
