Really have no way of telling whether it does work or not...is it worth the try?
I want to do a 5-speed swap, but can't afford it yet, so this might be a good alternative until the parts are gathered.10/31/2007 2:28:31 PM |

A hundred dolla is chump change for most transmissions. If it works it's a fuck of a good deal.
What the fuck is yours doing exactly anyway? 10/31/2007 2:32:20 PM |

it slips bad going from 1-2 and 2-3...also if it's in 2 high, it slips from a start as well. Makes pulling out into traffic iffy at best. Also, after this weekend, it seems to be a bit worse
Sometimes the overdrive goes off randomly going down the highway and refuses to come back on.
That's about it I guess. 10/31/2007 2:40:43 PM |

I'd be willing to bet that the overdrive issue is a result of the powertrain control module detecting excessive slippage.
I'd also be willing to bet that your front pump must have some issues, and your line pressure is probably pretty damn low.
Do you ever have ANY problems shifting into reverse? 10/31/2007 2:43:37 PM |

not really, threw it in reverse a bunch over the weekend without any issue.
Is the pump in the tranny?
also couldn't the problem be the governor and not the pressure?
on second thought, now that you mention that, it did stop having the overdrive problem as much when I switched to %60 lucus

I just came across this

and checked the codes....sure enough threw 26, 55.
Guess there are some electrical issues 10/31/2007 2:55:39 PM |

Does the 42RE have a proper governor? Lots of the electronically controlled trannies don't.
The pump is located in the front of the tranny. You gotta drop the tranny to get at it.
Now, after reading the article, it doesn't have a traditional centrifugal governor; rather, it has a governor valve that has the solenoid and sensor. The article is a good read...I think that's the best initial approach. 10/31/2007 3:08:40 PM |

yes, but what about the slipping? That can't be caused by the electronics can it? I think I might just go ahead and get the other tranny..if nothing else to have extra parts and something to rebuild outside of the jeep. 10/31/2007 3:25:10 PM |

that thread is dead on. at least 90% of the dodge truck transmissions i've worked on suffered from some sort of solenoid failure. VERY common issue.
did you ever bump the line pressure up and adjust the bands like i mentioned doing before callalantee? they benefit a lot from doing those two things, and often cause the symptoms you describe.
i really don't think it's a mechanical failure, at least it wasn't initially. may be by now. they're pretty stout transmissions, the electronics just suck. 10/31/2007 3:29:27 PM |

No, I pulled the pan to adjust the bands, but ran out of time. Not sure how to bump up the line pressure. Honestly, I didn't feel comfortable enough trying to adjust shit on the transmission when neither I nor Ryan had ever done anything like that. Plus Igor said it really fucked his trans up on his dodge when he tried. Lame excuse I know...but I have no choice but to deal with it now.
Plus I've been gathering parts and info for the 5-speed swap, so I didn't think about it too much.
