just got a new hp laptop with home vista. i installed firefox and it worked just fine for about two weeks.

a message popped up the other day that there was an update for firefox so i clicked to upload it. it said to restart my computer. i did that.

when i restarted and tried to pull up firefox it said "problem loading page." i uninstalled firefox, downloaded the .exe file on my roomie's computer, and reinstalled it three times and it never worked. internet explorer and netscape both say the same thing, "problem loading page." i am having to use someone else's computer.

what is the problem? my hp laptop is still connecting to the internet because i can get on aim and my gadget things still work. my roomie's internet on her computer is fine.

i don't know, but any "firefox update" that requires you to restart your whole computer is fake. Sound like you authorized the download and install of some kind of virus

the usual.......
run anti-virus (you do have anti-virus, right?)
run Windows Defender
run other spyware/malware cleaners like Spybot S&D, Adaware, CCleaner

ok well so far now that you put ^ everything in this thread reminds me of something that happened to me once

i ended up uninstalling explorer and my internet worked again

another similar problem happened with zonealarms firefall before i started using windows default firewall

[Edited on November 3, 2007 at 5:18 PM. Reason : try different combos of shit and tell us what happens?(no firefox, but ie, no ie but firefox, etc]

Well at least you got the "vista sucks" part right. The firefox updates always tell you to just restart the browser instead of the entire computer. Are you using wireless or regular ethernet and have you checked to make sure you're actually connected to the network?

have you tried uninstalling all your browsers and installing them one by one? and after you download the first one you see if you got internet, etc?

have you looked at your firewall yet?

what exactly have you done to get your browsers working?

shot in the dark bc, while vista isn't the best by far... idk that this is a vista-caused problem...
is there an option to go offline in firefox? i can't remember if there is or not, it's been a while, but that could be one possible mistake

ha, I didn't even see in the original post where you said you could get on aim. For firefox there is an option under file for Work Offline but it gives a message similar to:
Quote :
"Offline mode
Firefox is currently in offline mode and can't browse the Web.
* Uncheck "Work Offline" in the File menu, then try again."

Try restarting your computer again and see if it still does it. Probably won't work but it's worth a try. You can also turning your wireless card on and then off and see if it does the same thing. Is your roommate's computer also on wireless? I'm assuming you're using a router so try using the regular ethernet connection.

Viruses and spywarez.

Download and install AVG antivirus and AVG antispyware and run some searches with that in addition to what you're already using (I'm assuming the Symantec Antivirus given out by free from the university). Run searches in safemode, run searches in windows, repeat repeat repeat. If one antivirus package finds shit, and the other one doesn't find anything, uninstall the one that doesn't find anything (it's probably infected and reinstalling shit on your computer).

And where did this popup message come from/look like?

I hope it wasn't a pic on a webpage. D:

no it was one of those conversation bubbles that pops up on your toolbar where the volume picture is, and the two little TVs, and the symantec picture, and the little aim man .. just like the little message bubble that says "new windows updates" .. thats why i thought it was ok.

well then that would probably be a windows update that fucked it up, not firefox.

are you plugged in to wired outlet, and on wireless?? Ive seen issues with this before. Make sure you only have 1 internet connection enabled, either wireless or wired lan.

Does it say "local only" when you move the mouse over that icon, if so the problem is with your connection and not Firefox/ie. Try connecting to a neighbor’s network if you’re on wireless. You could also try to flush the DNS cache.

we generally saw this problem when people had stuff like Norton Internet Security or some other craptastic firewall/AV sfotware. got any of that?

It's not Vista's fault that you are completely incompetent.
