Ha ha. I'm just looking for a German restaurant or a European place that has authentic German items on the menu. The closest thing we had was Mr. Dunderbak's in Crabtree and even that closed (not that they served Veiner Schnitzel).
If only Guglhupf in Durham would serve dinner... 11/9/2007 9:42:01 AM |

MY POINT IS THAT PEOPLE DON'T KNOW HOW TO SPELL THE WORD PROPERLY SO I WAS GIVING THEM AN EXAMPLE OF ANOTHER GERMAN WORD WITH A SIMILAR SPELLING AND PRONUNCIATION, ASSHOLE.

it looked(s) to me like you're taking a few German words and holding them up an select cases where the spelling and english pronunciation don't match, when in fact it's common to the entire German language. It's just a rule - "W" is pronounced as an "english V", no matter what word it's in
Wiener = "Viener" Wagner = "Vagner" VolksWagen = "FolksVagen" 11/9/2007 11:41:20 AM |

Thanks for J. Betski's advice. It looks like a winner. I just made a reservation for tonight.
Sorry about my lack of German spelling expertise. After searching some more I think I meant Wienerschnitzel. 11/9/2007 11:53:57 AM |

Only place I've had it in the US where it was pretty good, was a little german restaurant at Hilton Head Island in SC, and I think that restaurant closed. So if you find a place, I'd like to know too! 11/9/2007 2:19:10 PM |

I go there almost every weekend. Sometimes more than once a weekend. And seriously, the food is great. It's a nice eclectic mix of German and Polish. The owner, John, has some last name I can't even pronounce, much less spell.
They do pork schnitzel, though. I don't think they do veal (weiner schnitzel is veal cutlet). Todd and John change up the menu on a fairly regular basis, though, and they may honor your request.
Betski's is probably my favorite place right now. I think you'll like it.11/9/2007 2:28:53 PM |

^^^ wiener schnitzel is not technically veal cutlet
kalbschnitzel is from veal, while schweinschnitzel is from pork
the word "Wiener" is from the city "Wien", or Vienna, how we say it.
It refers to the style of cooking of the meat
schnitzel, can be directly translated as Cutlet, though.
Basically you take a piece of pork or veal, usually the tenderloin, and you tenderize it (pound it) until it is extremely thin. You then bread it and lightly cook it in oil in a skillet. It is usually served with a side dish, perhaps gnocchi or french fries, but can also be prepared as a sandwich (e.g. schnitzelsemmel).
<-------schnitzel is my favorite meal, ever. 11/9/2007 3:46:04 PM |

I went to J. Betski's last night. It was very good. I would definitely go again.
We had a bottle of riesling. I forgot the name. The waiter recommended it. I'll have to go back and figure out what it was because it was the best riesling I ever had. Very crisp and not too sweet. I think the bottle was $39 which means it would be < $15 in the stores.
We had the smoked beef and pork kielbasa for an appetizer. It was very rich and good.
The GF had the pork schnitzel. It was excellent. I would have ordered it if she didn't. I had the roasted chicken. It was OK but I would get something more interesting next time. The guy at the table next to us had the braised beef and spaetzle and he raved about it. I will try that next.
The GF had the apple strudel for desert, very good but not as good as my mom's. I had the sachertorte. It came with pistachio ice cream. I'm not sure if it was made in-house but it was very good.
Overall the place is now my favorite restaurant in Raleigh. The only negative thing I can say is that it was extremely loud in there. The place isn't huge and the bar area is right next to the eating area without a full partition. The floors are wood and all the surfaces are hard. They should invest in some acoustic panels. 11/10/2007 3:15:05 PM |

The sachertorte is indeed made there. I've had it. I like it.
The braised beef and spaetzle is absolutely one of my favorite things there. You need to try it.
The smoked kielbasa is really good, as are the brats. Last time we were there, they had some pork pierogies that were outstanding. The latest greatest favorite is their pork belly. Infuckingcredible. 11/10/2007 3:43:21 PM |

roasted chicken is very popular in germany. that's practically all they serve at Oktoberfest (besides beer, of course).
