we went in Oct and stayed at the Best Western right outside downtown. Theres one right downtown, too. The one we stayed in was not the classiest looking place---but it was clean, there were normal looking people staying there, and it was like 127 per night.
we went whitewater rafting, although all of that is closed now. we also walked around downtown. lots of good places to eat and galleries. fun bars, too. we didn't really know what to do and stumbled on a lot of cool stuff by just wandering around downtown. 11/15/2007 1:44:48 AM |

Just make sure your windows aren't facing the exit for the club/bar. I stayed there once and was rudely awakened by an arguing couple. I opened the window to tell them to shut up and I almost threw up from what I overheard. It was seriously the most disgusting thing I have ever heard in my entire life.11/15/2007 9:29:38 AM |

walking the urban trail on a nice afternoon/evening is a fun way to spend some time downtown... although I guess it helps if one party knows some history of it...
There are a lot of other threads that address this exact topic... look for those & you're bound to find some other good ideas. 11/15/2007 1:28:40 PM |

they're building several apartments downtown, one of which will be the largest building in the city
I lived there, so I can't really recommend hotels, at least not cheap ones.

1) hike up town mountain road and sneak through the woods so you can sit on the rocks at the top of the beaucatcher i-240 cut and look at a really really really nice view. hands down the coolest free thing you can do here at night. you just gotta watch out for drunk high school kids when you're up there trying to find a nice spot to chill.
2) the downtown ghost tour.
3) drive around on the parkway, stop and have a picnic. duh.
4) the arboretum and the unca botanical gardens are both pretty places to get lost for awhile.

I just got back from there, stayed at the Sheraton Four Points downtown on Woodfin. Was a Best Western until very recently (they still have temporary signage up). The lobby is a mess and restaurant is closed because they're renovating, and the elevator's a little scary, but the room was pretty nice. Clean, comfy beds, and flat-panel TV.
Paid $116/night. Don't know where that falls on the "expensive" or not scale. I didn't mind, I was there on business and therefore not on my own coin. 12/5/2007 11:50:05 PM |

Bump this thread. Looking to go for our 5-year anniversary on Valentines Day weekend.
Hotel: Probably looking at staying at the Double Tree Hotel, but if anybody knows any nice B&Bs or smalltime hotels that are romantic or classy, let me know. Trying not to drop a grand on hotels, so we ain't staying at the fucking Grove Park Inn.
Activities: I am looking to spend 3 days in the area, so we got time to do stuff. One day is going to be spent at Biltmore, because she ain't been in years. After that, I have no plans, though I thought about going to Grandfather, Mt. Mitchell, etc. But gimme some ideas on shit, esp. if it could be considered something romantic. 1/2/2008 10:36:26 AM |

grandfather is nowhere near asheville. It is in the boone/blowing rock area. it's at least 1.5 hours away on the highways, or 2+ if you want to meander up the Blue Ridge Parkway
but if you're up for driving 1-2 hours, you could do Grandfather, or go west past Bryson City to the Nantahala Outdoor Center and find something to do there, or to the Smoky Mtn park1/2/2008 11:05:54 AM |

Like I said, I got 3 days and only one currently filled. Things I have been to previously and enjoyed are going up the mountains, driving the Ridge, and a long time back I went to Linville. More recently we went to LuRay caverns with the kids back in August, so I dunno how Linville compares. 1/2/2008 11:16:31 AM |

Check out the Renaissance hotel. I thought it was a great deal at $150 a night and was considerably closer to downtown than the Double Tree, and looks to be at least just as nice. I saw another hotel while walking around downtown called Haywood Park that looked nice, so maybe check that one as well. 1/2/2008 11:31:43 AM |

^^If you drive up to Linville, go out and walk the Linville Gorge to see all the water falls. It is kinda neat and romantic and not a real bad walk to see them all. The caverns are decent, not the greatest but still cool. 1/2/2008 11:35:47 AM |

Checked out the Renaissance. To get the cheapest room there on the same dates would run me $648.99, while I can book at the Doubletree for $479.69. I think I can handle a little longer drive time for that kinda price difference. 1/2/2008 11:59:17 AM |

How far away is Weaverville from downtown and Biltmore? I found one B&B up there called Dry Ridge Inn that has pretty great reviews and looks like rooms are $99/night. I've never gone B&B before, so wondering how that works and if the 10 minutes to town they claim is a real pain in the ass or not that bad. 1/2/2008 12:24:34 PM |

you can plan on doing outdoorsy stuff in Linville/Grandfather/Smokies/Mitchell, but it might be cold as shit in the middle of February. for example, the boone/blowing rock area it is between 3-10deg right now (in the middle of a storm) and probably <0 on top of grandfather - http://booneweather.com/ you could get "lucky" and have mid-30s on grandfather in february 1/2/2008 1:26:39 PM |

just a warning
Tunnel Rd is very commercial and far from the downtown area
I suggest the Renaissance or the Best Wester (across the street from the Renaissance and just off of 240)
I've also heard good things about the Days Inn downtown
if money is no object check out the Haywood Park Hotel
also, the Grove Park Inn has some special rates going... rooms for like $149 I saw some the other night for $99 1/6/2008 2:51:11 PM |

Money is an object. I'm just a state employee with 2 kids whose wife is working on college right now so I'm pretty much the only one bringing in money.
The Best Western on Woodfin is now a Sheraton and is not accepting reservations until April 28, 2008, so I am guessing they are renovating it from Best Western status.
Grove Park: Cheapest is $238/night. Renaissance: Cheapest is $159/night. Haywood: Cheapest is $220/night. Days Inn: Cheapest is $205 TOTAL, but its just a King room. We kinda wanted something a little fancier than Days Inn to be honest.
Hampton Inn: King w/Whirlpool: $119/night. Indoor pool, sauna, jacuzzi, fitness room.
How far is the Days Inn from downtown? I might consider that for the half price and to be closer to downtown, but I think the wife is going to want something nicer, and I can't drop for the Haywood or Renaissance. 1/7/2008 8:12:48 AM |

Old topic...so new/updated recommendations are appreciated...
Looking to plan a one-year wedding anniversary trip to Asheville for October (last weekend). I'm open to anything except for the Grove Park Inn (and anything in that price range). I don't mind spending a few bucks, but just not that much. I'm open to Bed and Breakfasts, small cabins, or just nice hotels. I'd like to be pretty close to downtown and all of the fun stuff to do (eat, drink, brewery tours, maybe a music show, etc)...but she's mentioned that she might want to go on a hike or something as well. That being said, I'd rather have a long drive to do something "outdoorsy" than have several long drives to do things in town.
Probably do a Thur/Fri/Sat and would like to keep it under $1,000 for three nights (but honestly I have no reference point as I haven't been to Asheville since I was a kid). 12/31/2013 9:52:12 AM |

if you want to be center downtown look into Hotel Indigo or the Aloft. i think either of those would offer the luxury you might be seeking and in prime locations.
within walking distance, and probably a bit cheaper is the 4 Points Sheraton.

4 Points Sheraton is where we usually go because it is significantly cheaper but still in walking distance to everything. However, while its a perfectly fine hotel, if the budget is "under $1,000 for 3 nights" I think its a little below what jbrick83 is looking for.
Aloft is stylish and affordable, but in my experience they are always kinda noisy (but I haven't stayed at this Aloft). I liked Indigo a lot and have stayed there a few times, the suites are baller and have killer views and should be just inside your price range
(Haywood Park is also an option if you really want to be in the center of things, but its got more of a traditional/dated style)
tl;dr i vote for suite at the indigo
as for the outdoorsy stuff, the Blue Ridge Parkway is a short drive away and you could take it up to Mt. Mitchell.

The Aloft in Charleston (North Charleston, right next to the outlets) is pretty shitty and looks like the Modern Hotel Monster took a dump right off I-26. I understand they do well in other places, but I guess I'd like to stay in a more mountain-ish/traditional/homey place. Although if you're looking at a mountain view with a fireplace in the background, it doesn't really matter if your place is a little modern. Checking out Indigo and its looking pretty good, although their nice suites are coming at about $500+ a night. 12/31/2013 10:56:09 AM |
