Have a year old, 13-inch white macbook (1gb ram, 2.0ghz core 2 duo, 80 gb HD) that I've been thinking of trading in for a macbook pro. Didn't want to do that JUST yet so as of today the following are in the mail:

2gb DDR2 SDRAM from crucial.com
120gb rugged portable HDD from LaCie
Leopard OSx


It's not that the macbook isn't functional enough, it's just that I wanted it to be better toy

Anyone else doing anything similar (who wouldn't normally upgrade like this)?

nope, i went from a powerbook G4 to a macbook pro. Never played around with macbook's or powerbooks. Mainly cause for my purposes I would need a better vid card and more power.

but the 2gb upgrade is definitely a nice touch. I still have the 1gb stick that came with it to sell,

Could someone explain RAM prices for me?
(all from Newegg)

RAM for a Macbook: DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) -- $25 for a 1GB stick.
RAM for an iMac G5: DDR 400 (PC3200) -- $55 for a 1GB stick.

But...
RAM for my 3-year old Acer Aspire 2025 laptop: DDR 333 (PC2700) -- $65 for a 1GB stick.


The older the computer and slower the RAM, the more expensive? What the heck?

supply/demand, dude.

DDR is going out of production because it's not going into new machines anymore, except for select legacy apps. DRAM companies are pumping out millions of DDR2 chips per week, though. Way too much supply - prices falling through the floor.

oh, and btw, you can use the $55 PC3200 instead of the $65 PC2700, if you want. it will slow itself down.

The 3200 stuff I posted isn't a SO-DIMM where the 2700 stuff is. Wouldn't fit.

oh right. well in that case, the reason the slower DDR on the SODIMM is more expensive than the faster DDR on the UBU DIMM is because the chips on the SODIMM are probably higher density (like 1Gb chips) and the ones on the UBU DIMM are probably 512Mb chips. The higher density chips cost more.

I am waiting for the 320g that toshiba is making available soon. My roommate just order a macbook pro 17" with 4g of ram and 200g or 250g hard drive, can't remember which one. pretty sick though

i dont want to start a new topic so ill just ask a question here:
my macbook core duo is not starting up. i think it is the optical drive that is messed up. when i start it up, a folder with a question mark is blinking on the screen. ive looked on forums for macbook and couldnt find anything, so does anyone know what to do?

edit: ive seen some things that say it could be the hard drive but that wasnt any problem before the optical drive broke.

i didnt pay anything for the laptop so i think ill just put a new HD and optical drive in if i can find them for a decent price. taking it to the apple store is out of the question- ive taken it apart so they will just tell me that the warrenty is voided and give me some rediculous price quote

if you didn't break anything and put it back together without damaging anything, then they won't know. i took my wife's macbook apart several times (fully apart, chassis completely out of the case, etc), and i've brought it back in to them and they've replaced stuff under warranty
