Quote : | "Well, if a test administered by GMAC Insurance is any indication, one in six people cruising our highways and byways -- roughly 36 million licensed drivers -- would flunk their driver's test if they had to take it today. Not only that, but based on the 2007 GMAC Insurance National Drivers Test data the state with the most road-going dummies is New York, while the most knowledgeable ones are out West to Idaho." |
The link has a list of the best to worst states. (NC is 'high up' at #13.)11/18/2007 2:23:03 PM |

yep, NC is bad. noticeably worse than other places I've seen.
and yeah, the big, square western states are better. 11/18/2007 2:27:15 PM |

^I imagine a similar number don't know what to do when coming to a yield sign. 11/18/2007 2:55:43 PM |

what kills me are the drivers that stop on a blinking yellow and treat it like a 4 way stop
the only time you treat a controlled intersection like a 4 way stop (when there arent 4 stop signs) is when the stop lights are inoperative
of course the first time i saw this wide spread was when i moved to ATL and where is georgia on that list...the bottom 11/18/2007 3:02:18 PM |

The thing that drives me nuts here (TN) is that a lot of people don't pull out into the intersection while waiting to turn left on an unprotected green. So in heavy traffic situations (which are a relatively new thing in the town where I live), NOBODY makes it through the light to turn left, not even one person.
At one point, someone was halfway out in the intersection in the same situation, and when the light turned yellow they started BACKING UP back into the turn lane and almost ran over my ass on my motorcycle!
I never noticed this problem in NC, maybe it's just a symptom of a low traffic area turning into a high traffic area...kinda like how nobody here knows how to merge onto an interstate because the nearest one was an hour away until a few years ago. Hooray merging into 70mph traffic at 40mph, lol. 11/19/2007 9:19:00 AM |

Sounds about normal for just about every rural area I've ever been in. Including down here in Beaufort County. Fuckers can't drive for shit around here. It's very common to get stuck behind some dumbass tooling around at 5mph under the speed limit. 11/19/2007 9:52:42 AM |

^^ Johnson City, TN. It's a town of about 50,000 people, so it's not exactly backwards, but it's surrounded by a lot of very backwards areas. 11/19/2007 12:20:25 PM |
