i see these threads a lot, and it seems i've done all the things that i remember being suggested (including the things i would suggest myself)...i've disabled everything through msconfig (though originally i just disabled things i thought might cause it)...still hangs...i put it on diagnostic startup and it DID start up faster, but heck if i can figure out why

any suggestions? again, i've disabled everything through msconfig...should i start messing around with system service stuff that i've added over the months? might one of those be the cause?

EDIT: might want to know specs - xp pro sp2 on a toshiba satellite M55-something...1.8ghz, 1.5gb ram

I would tend to guess virus. If scanning with AVG and symantec in safe mode doesn't work, then I suggest a reinstall or possibly running a bootable diagnostics program like pcdoctor- although you'd be getting some error messages probably if it was hardware.

Reinstall of windows should fix it. A repair might be lest drastic.

I know you used msconfig, but for shits & giggles ... hit up safe mode with sysinternals "autoruns" ... disable anything that is suspect not necessary.

If this is still not fixing it, you really need to come up with an error message ... or just reinstall Windows.

Out of curiosity, where is it hanging, ie, what are you staring at? I had a similar problem to this a while back and would like to link a similarity to determine a solution. Before I couldn't find enough information to decide a solution fast enough before I had to fix it.

obviously a reinstall of xp would fix, but i assume you don't want to go down that road.

just for fun run a system file checker by opening up dos window and running "sfc /scanow"

then booting into safe mode and run Scandisk.

definitely use a service guide like black widow or something and disable unnecessary services

defrag for the hell of it.

load default BIOS settings/update bios

open up the device manager and see if theres any problems/conflicts

if after all that still no luck

backup, then run a windows repair. if that doesn't do it then reinstall
