All of the old threads are dead and I didn't see a new one.
Saw this movie just now. I figured it would suck and that it wouldn't do the games any justice, so I didn't have very high expectations. I suppose it worked, because I thought the film was pretty good. Plenty of good shoot-outs and fight scenes, a decent bit of gore (no flying body parts or anything, just lots of blood spilling out of exit wounds), the main girl (who is hot, btw) shows her tits at least twice, and the dialog isn't overly cheesy or otherwise sad to listen to. I thought 47 was too talkative and he occasionally seemed to take unnecessary risks considering he's suppose to be 100% professional, but beyond that he was very much in character. I had my doubts about Timothy Olyphant pulling off the role, but he wound up doing a much better job than I thought he would.
Nitpicks:
-As stated above, 47 was very talkative. I always thought him to be the quiet type.
-The plot didn't make too much sense to me. Without giving a away spoilers, the job 47 was given at the beginning of the movie turns out to not be what it seems, and now someone is trying to kill him. What I don't really get is what the main bad guy's overall plan is, and why he needs 47 dead. Either they didn't explain it very well or I missed it entirely.
-Diana had pretty much nothing to do with this movie. She was only given lip service, in a manner of speaking. Not really a huge problem, but Diana has been a consistently present (main?) character in the Hitman series.
-Considering the nature of 47's "birth," I expected some sci-fi to be involved with the plot. No such thing at all. This movie is all about killing people. This isn't a bad thing, but I felt the trailers for this movie were a tad misleading in that regard.
I'd recommend at least one viewing. You don't have to have played any of the games to understand what's going on. Even if you haven't, it's a decent action flick. It's not pure action, though; 47's a methodical assassin who prefers subtlety over raw fire power, so the movie is really one part action and one part suspense.

Does he use twin ballers?
If so, do the bad guys get knocked like 5 feet in the air when you shoot them?
Also if so, does he cock his head slightly to the side when shooting them? 11/24/2007 7:19:34 PM |

Does anyone really expect anything out of this movie? I haven't seen it but I'll shoot from the hip...
It's a below average action movie where they just shaved some guy's head bald and called the movie Hitman so they could market it better. 11/24/2007 10:21:55 PM |

i saw this movie the other day and i enjoyed it overall, but there were still a few things i didn't like.
- 47 stands out like a sore thumb. i can buy it in the video game, but in the movie i'm not really prepared to accept that a sharply dressed bald guy with a bar code tattooed on his head can go unnoticed like this guy does.
- i wish they had gone a little bit further into detail about his past (or the agency and their clone armies in general). in fact, the whole plot in general felt like it was only there to give a basic pretext for him to shoot shit up.
- there was a lot more gunfighting in the movie than i was expecting. 47 wouldn't have gotten silent assassin rating for this mission 11/25/2007 1:00:58 AM |

It just finally occurred to me that the lead actress was completely unnecessary. Really, what did she do throughout the entire film? She wasn't even in danger (to give 47 an excuse to go rescue her or something). She didn't give 47 an opportunity for character growth, he pretty much stayed the same throughout the film. And she basically stops being in the film roughly two thirds into it. She was basically an excuse to fdt, which I can't complain about but a good movie do not a pair of boobies make.

I had this problem, too, although it did bother me in the games. Really, how do you walk around with a bar code on the back of your bald head and not draw attention? He could always wear wigs or something, or cover it up with makeup at the very least.

On the one hand I'm glad they didn't give away too many details of his past. Characters always seem cooler when they're mysterious (even though I already know 47's back story ). But on the other hand, I'm with you in that the plot was basically a giant excuse for 47 to go ape shit on people. Which may explain why I didn't completely follow the plot; there was no coherent plot to follow beyond what the script required.
Actually, I'm starting to wonder if it would have been better for them to just go the route of converting the first game into a movie.

He did have his moments of actual assassination as opposed to shooting the place up, but I have to agree. I guess that goes with my complaint about him taking more risks than necessary, for a guy who's suppose to be a ghost and leave no trace of himself.
After thinking about it some more, I think I'd change my rating of this film to 6.5/10. It's still worth at least one viewing imo, but it's nothing more than your standard action flick; lots of fighting and shooting and explosions with just enough plot conveniences to tie them together. I guess it was worth the five bucks I paid to see it, but it might have been better for me to wait to go see it at the Blue Ridge.11/25/2007 11:38:50 AM |

On the subject of bald guy with barcode in a suit standing out, I believe the idea behind that is that 47 is supposed to be so good of an assasin that it doesn't stop him. Besides, in the games at least (I haven't seen the film that much), how often did you stay in the suit? I don't know about you guys, but I changed clothes the first time I killed or drugged a civilian/guard/policeman. 11/26/2007 12:21:50 PM |

I haven't played Hitman or know anything about it aside from seeing the movie and the movie was not good. It was your average shitty action movie with even less background on the main character and an even more worthless female lead. I saw it with a decent group of friends so that made it fun to watch, but I wouldn't call it a good movie.

Well, the suit wasn't really what made him stand out so much. It was the shaved head, which is conspicuous enough on it's own, coupled with a giant bar code on his head that would make everyone who saw him remember him.11/27/2007 12:03:04 AM |

This movie sucked. How could you give it an 8.5 out of 10?
There was not many memorable action scenes, the lead girl was annoying and she wasn't hot (made the nudity not even enjoyable) and the ending blew.
3/10 and that is being generous. Talk about low standards for movies. 11/27/2007 12:44:11 AM |

To be fair I did lower my rating to a 6.5.
No the action scenes weren't particularly memorable or as crazy cool as some other action movies, but I was kept entertained. I admit that it might have been better to wait to go see it at the $1.50 theater, but I didn't totally hate it. To each his own, I suppose. 11/27/2007 1:27:59 AM |

Hell this guy doesn't even look like 47. In the games he is older and has a very deep voice. I think the right guy would have made it better like Jason Statham whom a lot of people wanted. Also the just shooting people up sucked. I was expecting more silent kills. I would still say it was decent. 11/27/2007 1:55:52 AM |
umbrellaman All American 10892 Posts user info edit post |
I should also add that, since 47 is suppose to be a "silent assassin," this movie wasn't really suppose to be about crazy shootouts and action scenes and stuff. Which I suppose is why the movie wasn't as good as it could be; it couldn't entirely make up its mind about whether or not it was suppose to be an action flick or a stealthy suspense thriller. In the end the makers sort of went 50/50, which admittedly did make it feel like the movie fell flat. If 47's killing style was portrayed as it was meant to be, the general movie-watching--with their short attention spans--would get bored with this movie. So even though 47 didn't become an action hero, I'm sure that all those fight scenes and stuff were thrown in as a means to increase ticket sales.
Shit, maybe I should lower my rating again. 11/27/2007 2:06:53 AM |

When I played the Hitman game, I would just load up on weapons and health, and go in guns blazing. It always worked out. All you had to do was find a spot with only one opening, and wait for people to come through and kill them, take their weapons, and keep killing people until everyone on the level was dead.
This usually was quicker than just sneaking around everywhere. 11/27/2007 2:44:42 AM |

I don't think you get fined, but you lose points for not being sneaky.
You still end up ahead, points wise, but it's obvious it's not the point of the game. 11/27/2007 3:11:15 AM |
umbrellaman All American 10892 Posts user info edit post |
I think you're right. You don't get fined in the second game. There was no money system in the second game (which I wish they hadn't removed it, since it was in every other game I believe), there was only the two meters for how stealthy you were and how many people you killed. Although I never tried it myself, you could get a ranking of "Ghost" if you managed to kill everybody in the level without raising any alarms or suspicions.
I think you do get fined in every other game, though. And if you lose too much money you get a game over. In a way I guess that forces the player to not be a homicidal maniac, thus removing the complete freedom to play however you want. But 47 is suppose to be an assassin with a sense of honor and justice, so I don't think he'd kill civilians anyway unless he absolutely had no choice.

Man I remember the first mission of Hitman 2, I never wanted to kill the postman at the beginning because he was a civilian, but if I used the anesthetic on him, he would always wake up halfway through my mission and run around without his clothes on and I'd be in trouble.
And yeah, you could go in guns blazing at get the "psychopath" rating, but I found it more satisfying to go for "silent assassin". Although every now and then I would get so frustrated that I would go ballistic and destroy everything. 11/27/2007 10:46:12 AM |

^you can still get SA a lot easier if you fiberwire the guard that came out to pee at the beginning near the corner you face to begin with. Hide him, disguise, and sneak up to the boss' room and wait. If you're good you can get a fiberwire while the boss is going in/out of the balcony, or else just use the silenced 9 if you have it. 11/28/2007 10:01:32 PM |

Looks like another generic Hollywood action movie that completely fails to capture what the Hitman series is all about. The games are incredible at capturing stealth action and planning every detail of the mission with Agent 47 getting in and out without anyone even realizing he was there to begin with. Instead it shows that he not only intentionally gets captured, but his face is on camera and visible to everyone and he just shoots a bunch of guys through over the top action sequences and helicopters crashing into buildings.
If they wanted to make it a good Hitman movie that is true to the source material, they should set it up like a less light-hearted Ocean's 11 film but with an assassination rather than a heist. A perfect introduction to the character would be some other target at a big dinner or something with Agent 47 disguised in the background taking people out without the audience even realizing it is him.
