follow the instructions that came with your motherboard, and be sure to always touch something metal like the case to discharge static electricity... other than that you may want to look up how to apply thermal paste if your cpu heatsink/fan didn't come with thermal paste on it. the rest is pretty self explanatory, just don't force things into the slots.

About a month from now I'm thinking about doing this for the first time. I had a question:

Do most processors/cooling fans come pre-coated with thermal paste or a thermal pad?

I'm all but 100% sure it's best to replace a thermal pad with thermal paste, but is it best to clean a pre-coated surface from all thermal paste and apply your own? At least that way you know what you are getting, but then again I'd probably screw up applying it so it might be better for me.

you are correct.

buy some Arctic Silver 5 and do it yourself - http://www.arcticsilver.com/as5.htm

instructions - http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm

if you're hardcore, lap the heatsink - http://www.easypckits.com/products/hslkwg/

Quote :
"What is a lapping kit? A lapping kit is a varying set of sandpaper ranging from 400 grit to 2500 grit designed to help provide a flatter surface for your heatsink. Why should the surface be as flat as possible? Chances are, your heatsink has a decently flat surface, enough to get you by. This gives thermal paste it's power to fill the gaps to give better thermal conductivity between the heatsink and the CPU. Now imagine a mirror finish, as flat as possible surface. With this lapping kit, now you can make your heatsink have an ideally flat mirror finish surface that will provide the best possible contact with thermal paste and whatever CPU you are using."

don't drink and build at the same time. Did that once, spilled beer all over the mobo when it was on. It quickly powered down and went to mobo heaven...
