Most of the people at my high school went there (I lived 15 minutes from it)... largely comprised of people who didn't make it into State, Chapel Hell, or Duke, couldn't afford State, UNCCH, or Duke, or who just wanted to keep living at/near home. Probably better academics than Charleston (wild guess, I don't know shit about Charleston)...
As for majoring in language, she's probably be fine at almost any college. I haven't heard anything special about UNCC's foreign language programs, anyway. 11/25/2007 9:40:12 PM |

If she parties it is easier to party in Charleston, the school is downtown. However UNCC is not downtown and about a 20-20min cab ride. 11/26/2007 9:09:52 AM |

NO! NO NO NO NO ABSOLUTELY NOT! I transferred here as soon as I possibly could get out of that hell hole. There is no student life. None. At all. The place shuts down after classes end. It is mostly a commuter school. Plus, the actual campus is located a far distance from the actual city of Charlotte. You're not close to any kind of night life or much at all to do. The local cops are paranoid as hell and if you're out just walking on the street after the sun's gone down, you have a good chance of being stopped and questioned. The administration sucks, the dean's office sucks, and neither of them talk to any of their academic departments. It takes forever to jump through all the loopholes of getting any paperwork done. Case in point: they still think I'm enrolled there and keep billing me every semester, despite repeated calls trying to get them to realize that I transferred. The academic departments are below standard quality, with the exception of the architecture guys. OH MY GOD, their architecture guys work harder than anything I've seen, even here. Outside of that, nothing distinguishes the school. It's the same or worse education than you would get at another place. Even in something as mundane as Psychology, I am so glad I transferred here, because the education I would have gotten at UNC-Charlotte would NOT have prepared me AT ALL for what I would have to do as a career. I know a number of people who finished out at UNC-Charlotte and then had to go get second degrees to get a real education. In short, NO. 11/26/2007 1:05:17 PM |

I graduated from there in 2006 and am now at NCSU as a grad student. I loved the history program there. True it was was a bit of a commuter school, but it was fine by me because I was a little older. Everyone that I was in contact with was very helpful and courteous. Didn't really feel like a number rather than a name like here at NCSU. 11/26/2007 3:07:20 PM |

This in my opinion is actually a good thing. The University Area (the part of town in the general area of the university) is much, much better than the actual city of Charlotte. Perhaps not better in terms of nightlife like clubs and shit, but the bars are definitely more well-maintained than those in the city itself. Besides that, the city of Charlotte is pretty crappy anyway (as a living environment), at least compared to the city area of Raleigh. In Charlotte the suburbs (which UNCC is in) are far better than the downtown area.
I will agree with you though that most UNCC academics are sub-par and that it's mostly for commuters. Like I said before, it's the college for people who don't make it into the Research Triangle or who want to keep living at home.11/27/2007 3:12:29 AM |

My brother went to school there. For some reason he thought that justified him being a supporter of Chapel Hill. He was definitely one of those Wal-Mart Chapel Hill fans. 11/27/2007 10:04:58 AM |

I have friends that go there and I hate visiting. No nightlife at all, the campus sucks, and it does shut down after classes. I don't like that part of Charlotte and the education is definitely on the community college level (similar to pembrooke and ecu). The people there are ghetto as hell and everyone seems to try to act black (maybe its just my opinion).
On the other hand, Charleston is a beautiful city in the heart of the south. It is historic and has character. The nightlife is great, the women are GORGEOUS, and its the last true southern city. Not to mention CofC looks much better framed on a wall then a Charlotte degree. 11/27/2007 6:50:03 PM |
