A South Carolina farmer cut off his own arm after it got stuck in a corn harvester, WYFF4.com reported Sunday.
Quote : | "The nightmare for Sampson Parker of Kershaw County, S.C., began when he noticed a piece of cornstalk stuck in a farm machine in September. When he tried to release the cornstalk, his hand got stuck in the machine.
After about an hour of being trapped, with no response to his calls for help, Parker's arm became numb. He reached for his John Deere pocket knife and started cutting his fingers.
. . .
Shortly after Parker began his dramatic rescue, a fire broke out. He then did the only thing he could to save his life — sacrifice his right arm, WYFF4.com reported.
With little-to-no time to spare, Parker went straight for his arm, cutting away from the bone as fast as he could. Once he severed his arm from his body, he managed to drive himself to a road where a firefighter helped him with the injury.
. . .
Parker said he is doing fine now and has tried to put the ordeal behind him.
"It really wasn't the corn picker's fault. It was my fault. It was just a mistake I made," he said.
Parker did not immediately return a telephone message Monday from The Associated Press." |

You do know that was just a character he was playing in a movie.
Will Smith doesn't really have a robotic arm.

Boy Hears Screams, Rescues Injured Farm Worker
Quote : | "Autryville — A Sampson County boy is being hailed as a hero after alerting authorities to a farming accident that critically injured a worker.
Jonathan Pounder had been sent home from school for acting up in class on Nov. 5 when he heard screaming from a nearby field.
"(It was) like someone was getting hurt," Jonathan said.
The 12-year-old tried to convince his mother to find the source of the screams, but she and other adults dismissed him.
. . .
When McKee and her mother went with Jonathan in search of the source of the screams, they found a farm worker dangling from a combine.
"He was hanging from his arms," Jonathan said. "It was gross."
Lalo Rodriguez was knocking a pile of corn off the combine when the rollers pulled his arms into the machine.
A dozen firefighters had to employ two extraction devices to free Rodriguez from the combine. He was airlifted to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, where his right arm had to be amputated at the elbow.
Authorities said Jonathan's quick thinking likely saved Rodriguez's life.
. . .
The Faith Chapel Church of God in Roseboro is accepting donations for Rodriguez's family, since he is the only provider for his wife and three sons and Christmas is a few weeks off. People can bring donations to any of the church services or mail donations to the church at P.O. Box 1369, Roseboro, NC 28382." | http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/2089024/11/27/2007 6:38:36 AM |

The bone was probably broken pretty badly anyway. He was probably cutting through the tendons and marrow or whatever other nastiness is in and around the bone.

I'd be willing be bet he cut it off at the elbow so he didn't have to go through any bone. I'm suprised he was so quick to cut off his arm. I remember a while ago there was that hiker who got his arm caught under a boulder and was stuck there for a few days. He finally put a tourniquet on his upper arm, crushed the bone with a rock, cut through the flesh with his dull pocketknife and walked a couple miles until he reached a road. 11/27/2007 12:16:02 PM |

Left out of the quotes in the original post....
Quote : | ""My skin was melting. It was dripping off my arm like plastic, plastic melting. I realized I was in trouble," Parker told WYFF-TV.
"I just told myself, 'I'm not going to die here,"' Sampson Parker said Monday on NBC's "Today Show."
"I just kept fighting, kept praying. And then when I did get loose, I jumped up running, I had blood squirting from my arm," he said of the September incident. "It was pretty scary there for a while."
Parker, a construction supervisor in Kershaw County about 20 miles east of Columbia, farms as a hobby.
"I could feel the nerves as I was cutting my arm off," he recalled.

Ok, so his fingers were what was stuck because it says he began cutting at this fingers after an hour of sitting there and then he cut his arm off after the thing caught fire. What the fuck? If he's sitting there for an hour in no immediate danger (the machine had not caught fire yet) why would he decide to cut his fingers off, boredom? If only his fingers were caught you would think that he would have been able to yank them out, granted it may cause some severe damage to his hand. This guy seems like he was looking for an excuse to cut his arm off 11/27/2007 3:05:56 PM |
