A breakdown of all the openings and which coaches will fill them.
Texas A&M gets their number one guy, former Green Bay head coach Mike Sherman and comes under fire from the Black Coaches Association for not interviewing a minority coach. Sherman was an assistant at A&M and considered A&M a dream job.
Houston Nutt leaves Arkansas and goes to Ole Miss.
Current openings: School - Coach - Reason Southern Miss - Jeff Bower - resigned (didn't see that coming) Nebraska - Bill Callahan - fired Duke - Ted Roof - fired Georgia Tech - Chan Gailey - fired Baylor - Guy Morriss - fired Colorado State - Sonny Lubick - fired Michigan - Lloyd Carr - retired (forced?) Northern Illinois - Joe Novak - retired after an exceptional 12 seasons at NIU SMU - Phil Bennett - fired Washington State - Bill Doba - resigned, probably forced Arkansas - Houston Nutt - resigned due to crazy Arkansas fans and took over Ole Miss 11/27/2007 8:54:00 PM |

Paul Johnson with John Tenuta at GT would suck to prepare for Jim Grobe to Nebraska?? 11/27/2007 9:19:55 PM |

Grobe has said many times that he is happy at Wake. He is pretty much a god there and his job security is pretty solid. I doubt he goes anywhere. Now you know Paul Johnson is going somewhere this year. It was surprising that no one picked him up last year. Perhaps he was approached by some schools, but wanted to wait for better opportunities, such as a Georgia Tech or a Nebraska. 11/27/2007 9:41:02 PM |

I don't think Washington should fire Willingham. He hasn't been there long enough to really get results. I mean they did nearly upset USC the other year. UCLA's coach on the other hand seems to be underachieving a little, but they may want to give him another year to see what he can really do with that #3 ranked recruiting class he has coming in. I did hear on College Football Live that there is a rumor that he has to upset USC or else he's fired. 11/27/2007 9:55:01 PM |

I would have thought Houston Nutt could have negotiated a buyout or at least a release to step down at Arkansas. It looks like since he left of his own volition, and resentment over his going to Ole Miss, Arkansas is going to hold his feet to the fire and make him buy his own contract out. 11/27/2007 9:59:35 PM |

Yeah the Bower one surprised me the most. That guy was a mainstay at Southern Miss and had the fourth longest tenure in college football. Only Paterno, Bowden, and Beamer have longer tenures.
There are two good articles over on ESPN about it. One talks about Nutt in it as well.

Found this interesting:
Quote : | " Southern Miss
Sources say the school has contacted N.C. State assistant Andy McCollum. He would be a great fit in Hattiesburg. He successfully led Middle Tennessee's transition from I-AA to I-A during his there (1999-2005).
South Carolina defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix is another strong player. He is a USM grad who spent 10 years on the Golden Eagles coaching staff. Nix built some killer defenses in Hattiesburg before leaving for South Carolina in 2005.
Also expect current Middle Tennessee coach Rick Stockstill and Georgia Southern coach Chris Hatcher to be involved.

I would hate to see McCollum go. He is great recruiter and our best defensive assitant.

That Rudy rule is stupid.
I would've thought we were past that point where we have needed to use some sort of affirmative action in cases like these.
While I do think it's important that "minority" (hell, who are we kidding. If they interviewed five hispanics and some asian guys, the BCA would still be crying foul) coaches, it doesn't need to be done in every case.
Ole Miss picked up Houston Nutt. He was an established coach at Arkansas. He was their first choice. It worked out. The end.
TAMU wanted Mike Sherman. Dude used to coach the Green Bay Packers of all places. For the most part, pro coaches do well in the college ranks (Callahan and Wannstedt didn't get the memo). They wanted him first and they got him.
I wouldn't want to waste my time hiring someone for the sake of doing things "the right way." If I was forced to do that, I'd fly him over, treat him to lunch, and tell him he's not getting the job and that this whole process was simply a formality. Way to waste some tuition dollars there. 11/28/2007 11:49:45 PM |

Quote : | "Thursday, November 29, 2007 here a coach there a coach Arkansas
Jeff Long is doing his best not to slight hog fans. He is looking far and wide and talking to candidates all across the country. I feel confident that the Razorbacks are going to get a good coach and I think it is going to be a Lane Kiffin type hire. I think with all that is going on this search is going to be a doozy. Get ready to hear every name under the sun
This weekend is going to be a madhouse. I hope Jeff Long will be able to nail down his hire before Les Miles bail for Michigan but I doubt it. If UCLA loses and fires Karl Dorrell that also has hug implications.
Tommy Tub – he is using you hog fans. I am told there is no way he is leaving. Then again I could be getting used too. Lane Kiffin – If Jeff L can make this happen he needs to jump all over it. Did he use the Arkansas job to get his name out there for UCLA? If it is Kiffin it won’t happen until Sunday or Monday. Mike Leach – also eying UCLA job. Chris Peterson – see above. Brian Kelly – I am told he was contacted indirectly yesterday, I haven’t been able to get a report on his feedback. Jim Grobe – I don’t think he is the right fit for the Hogs. Bobby Petrino – a good source told me that he is waiting on LSU but that if Miles stayed Arkansas would be possible. My gut says he stays in Atl. Jim Mora Jr. – if Ty Willingham gets another year would Jr. come back south? Word his he has marginal interest. Steve Sarkisian - If you are willing to hire the man that was going to be Sarkisian's OC why not hire the man. Gus Malzahn – I was told that if Major Applewhite turns Houston down Gus in on their list. If this hire goes good this could be the only chance for the hogs to hire Gus. They are thinking about that I assure you.
Duke I’ve said Al Borges all along, but it looks like the Dukies are wanting a head coach. Glen Mason seems to be making the most noise. But with the OBC on campus yesterday you know he was pushing the talents of Steve Spurrier Jr. I think he has a real chance. David Cutcliff would be a great hire for this job, he would jump at the chance. I read Mike Shula but have not heard that myself.
SMU
SMU fans are confused. I understand, you have never gone through a high-profile search like this. Did you read the words I just said: “HIGH PROFILE.” Do you think this search is getting such attention from big names because of Phil Bennett’s success? STEVE ORSINI. Ponies, I have been trying to tell you, this man knows what he is doing.
As I told you a few days ago Rick N. is in the mix. A flurry of emails told me I was an idiot, but that’s ok. I was speaking with a well-connected Pony booster this morning who said if we don’t hire Rick now this means he isn’t our first choice and that will let the air out of the sails. WHAT? If you get RN now or next week you tap dance to the Green Elephant naked. If Steve O is waiting on Paul J (or some other that means he thinks he has a chance
It is obvious there is a lot still in play. Steve O is waiting to see what all shakes out this weekend. Does Paul Johnson get Georgia Tech? Relax Pony fans and think about the fact that the worst you are going to do is Fran, and that is pretty darn good. Think back to the search last time. You were choosing between Phil Bennett and the guy at Mrs. Baird’s bread. (Skip H was mentioned I know).
Steve O’s list. I swapped Chan with Rick N. after a call I got last night.
1. Paul Johnson 2. Chan Gailey 3. Rick N 4. Fran 5. Bowden 6. Mason

I don't know if it's been posted but Randy Edsall interviewed for the Georgia Tech job... I knew this was coming eventually but I hoped it was for a bigger job than Tech. Don't get me wrong, they have a proud tradition (7 NC's I think) but right now they are a VERY DISTANT second in their state and right in the middle of a pro sports city..
** On the plus side, Skip Holtz would be the leading candidate to replace him and that would screw ECU over...

95% chance paul johnson will be at georgia tech next year. my boss told me that yesterday before he left for the navy vs. army game with the johnson family. coach johnson has georgia tech the highest on his list because he used to coach georgia southern i believe, knows the area, knows florida, and it's close to the nc mountains where he's from.
also fwiw. two coaches (ex-ncsu and current navy) have said that blake (http://tarheelblue.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/blake_john00.html) is crooked at unc and they've heard from recruits that he is making numerous recruiting violations, including extra stipends and cash. 11/30/2007 3:09:45 PM |

I saw that too about O'Brien. No way that happens though. When he got the job down here he remarked how it had long since been his and his wife's goal to get back to this part of the country. He loves recruiting in the Tidewater VA area and him and his wife have that house down in Charleston. He wants this to be his last coaching job and retire down there. Plus I think he wants to stick around and really prove a point to BC's athletic director. 12/1/2007 3:42:06 PM |
