don't call me, ask me to verify my SSN, tell me a lie, refuse to tell me your last name or branch you work at, and then get upset when I tell you I'll call, report fraud, and handle anything that needs to be handled. And don't call my cell phone and leave me a message saying to call you back.
Some wench just called my house phone, saying there's an issue with my SSN being a digit off with one of my accounts. I told her there was no way I was giving her my SSN over the phone, but that I was going to call SECU and report fraud.
BTW, it actually was a SECU employee, at the branch across from campus (where I never go, anyway), and I just got off the phone with her boss.

Hopefully, no one gets fired from one phone call like this, without any questioning.
And I asked the branch mgr did SECU policy intentionally go against every grain of common sense when it comes to financial matters and privacy, and he did seem quite bothered.
I'm deciding whether or not to just go in person right now. I have work at 4 on campus, but I don't wanna muddy things up prematurely.

- why not? - it's a good way to get immediate answers - people take you more seriously when you show them you care enough to show up in person - I'm a control freak - someone did something wonky
basically, someone showing up to handle something in person = really serious business

I don't care about that yet.
I wanna know wtf is going on. Like - has she done this before - is she engaging in criminal activity - why - is she a new employee - why she was secretive
the lie she told me: the SSN associated with one of your accounts is off by a digit She wouldn't tell me which account. I know for damn sure it aint my checking acct, because I always mix up the two sets of four numbers, and so have them look it up by SSN. And your share account is the most important account you have there, so it's not that one either.

That is sketchy. The only thing that they ever ask you to do is to verify the last 4 digits of your SSN or your account number when YOU call them to conduct bank business over the phone. 11/29/2007 2:42:24 PM |

that's really really fucking weird... I'd def go up there and see what the hell is going on and if the manager agrees there was ANY reason for her to call and ask for your social. Assuming there was a real problem, they should have asked you to come to the branch and verify some things, and gave a real explanation of why. SSN's don't magically change by one digit in their system unless somebody has been messing with it.

Ok
I had my SSN backwards with my sister on an account at CCB when I was like a kid. (we got the accounts same day and they were keyed in backwards) There were a retarded amount of forms required to get it fixed. I had to sign and mail originals back to do it. Even then it never got fixed and ultimately I just cleaned out my account there and let them purge it.
Something tells me a SSN being wrong on an account is not something anyone could or would try to fix over the phone. 11/29/2007 2:54:06 PM |

I jsut found out that this is the same agent who told my sister that we needed to both come in with our birth certificate in order to prove that we really were sisters (eligibility is established vertically through the family unit, and not laterally) . My birth certificate is lost somewhere at my parent's house, and doesn't list a father, anyways.
This has been cleared up. Basically, - my dad's account has my SSN on it. When my sister went in with my dad to open her shares account, they looked for my dad's SSN to verify her eligibility. Of course, they couldn't find it. - Since my social was on all accounts involved at SECU, they called me (we have a unique last name) - The agent deviated from standard policy, and was oppositional. Concerned with possible fraud, she was trying to keep any more info from falling into my hands (she doesn't sound bright to begin with)

I know, right? Doesn't mean someone can't take my SSN and run like the wind with it. I've seen first hand my best friend dealing with some shit that came about during HS with someone using her SSN. NO THANKS

ok so unless secu comes up with something really cool really soon, then i'm taking my money elsewhere
they refused to let me deposit a check in my account today. they made me go to bb&t and cash it where it was drawn, and then bring a thing of cash back to the bank and put it in
they gave me shit, and i thought they only did that if there wasnt money to cover it in the account, or if you were trying to CASH it.
i asked them if they'd just not credit the motherfucker until it cleared the other bank. the manager came out and told me its their policy to accept large checks in deposits.
it totally blew my mind that the bank didnt want my money. i guess if i won the lottery, i'd have to get it in cash. 2/6/2008 9:50:24 PM |

^ and ^^^ thats insane, if you have the money to cover it they should cash it...
If you don't have the money they place a 7 day hold and let you have like a max of 150 out of it until the time passes. I've cashed some big checks (several grand) there and they always allowed it along as I had in an account. The one time I didn't I had to deposit it and wait 7 days.

A few years ago, bofa gave me hassle over a similar situation. I came in and needed to deposit a large check, and then have a cashier's check drawn for about 3/4 of the amount. The manager came out, and started to give the run around. He told me they could, but I would be responsible if it didn't go through. I told him I trusted the person greatly. I then asked if he recognized the name, because he is an exec. in his bank. They gladly made my cashier's check, and I left happily.

TheTabbyCat All American 4428 Posts user info edit post |
yeah, the only requirement to get the 5% interest is you have to have one direct deposit each month, which most people have anyway...I think if you don't have one, then the interest goes down to like 2 or 3%. 2/7/2008 9:07:38 AM |

The capital bank acct sounds good--when they say "all ATM fees" I'm assuming that you get charged by them for using an ATM and then they refund the charge? It seems impossible that they would cover the fee charged by the ATM operator. Though I could be wrong.
While I do like the idea of 5% interest rather than however much SECU gives (IIRC less than 1%) it would be a giant hassle to switch banks though. Wonder how much I'd make in a year interest-wise...?
Also, one of the really nice things about SECU is their low fees. I tend to have a minor issue with remembering exactly how much is in my checking account towards the end of the month, but since their overdraft fees are so low ($0.50 per occasion) it's no big deal. Wachovia on the other hand, where I still have a small account in case I can find one of their ATMs but not a cash points, charged me I think $20 the last time I overdrafted there. 2/7/2008 9:54:12 AM |

^ok, I wasn't aware of the other two conditions, but I do that anyway so I still get the interest. I think most people have at least 10 debit or check card transactions and view their statement online. And they do cover the fee for the ATM operators. So, you can use any ATM you want and get the fees back at the end of the month. They also have their own ATMs and those are fee free. 2/7/2008 10:04:58 AM |

When I was home in Charlotte my dad had probably 8 years worth the change he wanted to get cashed out so I told him since I was a member of secu we could take it there. Fact: the machine doesn't like it when you throw a metal golf ball marker in with the jars of change. But after grinding down the metal somewhat it spit it out in the return coin tray. It was still pretty toasty from all the heat build up due to friction. On a side note: the machine does count sacajuwia(no fucking clue how to spell that) coins, susan b anthony coins, and $0.50 coins. 2/7/2008 10:47:21 AM |

I accidentally found out that they count some won coins in their coin counters too
and I had the best experience at the centennial SECU today! They gave me a check book for the wrong account which caused a check to bounce, but they're taking care of the late fees and everything because it was their mistake.
