so whenever i run, more than 100m or so i start to get back pain, mostly concentrated in the lower back. anyone have any ideas as to what would be causing this?

it occurs whether i have inserts in my shoes or don't

the typical causes are muscle imbalance or overpronation

overpronation, is that how the foot rolls when it hits the ground?

I had something similar when I had a herniated disk. I did some physical therapy and now I just stretch it out before and after running and I do fine.

As much shit as people talk about chiropractors, they actually helped me out a bit.

i'm extremely flexible and in shape (shaolin kung fu since 2001, roller hockey, basketball, breakdancing)

yeah man they honestly do.

i have a long torso and my lower back isn't nearly as flexible as most peoples. so my lower back had trouble getting stretched/conditioned and i had some really bad nerve pain down there a few years back. I remember one night in particular after working at my old restaurant (i was a cook) i went home and after i showered i couldn't stand up. i physically had to lay on the floor for the rest of the night cause i was in so much pain.

i went to the chiropractor over the course of a summer to stretch/crack/ and condition my lower back in hopes to strengthen and reposition several bones down there. needless to say it worked like a charm. i had a relapse a year later and went back for several sessions but since then i've been stretching it out regularly and its been doing great.

^hmmm, it sounds like it could be the way your feet are landing. maybe running flat footed, or something.

that's what i'm thinking, i think i run on my toes, i have like a spring, or bounce to my walk and apparently my run (i my legs are built for strength and not endurance) but i think i land flat footed. for some reason i thought inserts would help with that but they don't seem to. any idea how to fix that?

^^ You could talk to a coach or at least someone at a running related store and get some tips on how to improve your stride. For me it took a conscious effort to actually run with good form. That actually helped out a lot.

go to the athlete's foot at cameron village and they'll probably suggest some shoes that would help. i had really bad shin splints a while ago and i never had them again after buying the shoes they recommended.

then again shin splints are a little different than back pain, but try it anyway
