I'm starting to think it's pretty close. I can only remember that team losing to the likes of Hampton, Ohio and College Charleston, which is pretty similar to the losses we have in UNO and ECU. Wasn't that Doh's second year too? It just brought me back to those good days and watching UNC get spanked by 20+ on most nights because they played no defense. I'm hoping we're not that bad but you can't shake the similarities.

BTW, this is an anti-Jinx thread to counteract against Grant's proclamation of a 4-loss season.

Normally I dont think we are as bad as we seem after a loss, and there is some silver lining, but IT WAS FUCKING ECU!!

yeah, there's really no silver lining here. We played like shit in every facet of the game, and (on paper) we had every single fucking advantage over them. Our guards are more athletic, our big men are taller and stronger, we're loaded at every position. And yet we looked like complete shit...again.

You can't even write this one off as "oh, we just needed a kick in the ass"

because New Orleans should have done that for us. It didn't.

Wojo is Duke's big man coach on a staff with even more guards.

to me the idea that you have to have a big guy to coach the bigs on a basketball team is stupid. you dont have to have played the position to know the fundamentals.

exactly. Wojo at Duke has coached Elton Brand, Carlos Boozer, and Shelden Williams. All three great college players, two great pros.

It doesn't have anything to do with our coaching staff being a lot of guards or anything like that. It looks like to me that we have a coaching problem with defense, motivation, and desire.

plus, most of the work for bigs takes place in the off season. if a program really wants to get them some more specialized coaching, send them to a big man camp.

^oh yeah. add that to the list as well. sidney lowe has some real problems to work out. it is one thing for this team to lose to NOU very early in the year. but ecu, who just got hammered by clemson on ecu's home floor, is completely unacceptable and really for the first time in his tenure, brings in to question his coaching ability.

Why are we talking about our assistant coaches? I have not seen one of our asst's talk to any player for any reason during the game or even during a timeout, they just look so out of place and let Lowe take care of everything. Not to pile on to this small coach big man thing, but Guthridge taught the bigs at UNC, seems like I can rattle off about 8-10 that went onto substantial NBA careers.

This team is somewhat close to the 8-20 UNC team but not talent wise. We'll certainly post a better record, but I see .500 at 15-15 as a real possibility because of complete ineptitude on the coaching staff's part that trickles down to the players, not that we have the most "cerebral" players to begin with. The amount of talent that we have this year, even with no coaching whatsoever (or even with Gavin as a player coach), should get us wins over N.O. and ECU, MSU is the only team that we should have needed a coach for this season, and they are an average team in the Big X. Doherty was dealing with an abomination of talent at UNC, we are not

yeah this team is worlds better than that unc team and will not be that bad. there is plenty of talent for this team to be good. there is certainly something messing it up right now. whether its chemistry, coaching, etc. hopefully they get it figured out.

^ Not really, we're going to beat S Car st, Western, Presb, and N.C. Central. Right now, we're 4-3, with those 4 wins we would be 5 games over .500, so with the rest of the season (19 additional games) we could go 7-12 and still be .500 granted we win the scrub games at home. And I'm not making any excuses for the team, but ECU is better than S Car St, Western, Presb, and Central. This team will get better, but it isn't going to be overnight, and everyone should get prepared for the Davidson beatdown, they were leading UCLA by 16 at one point on Saturday I believe (and gave Duke and UNC all they could handle), they'll eat us for lunch, they're one of the smartest teams in basketball and our team, well, isn't.

To be fair, D'oh had that 8-20 year without his good recruits. He set the stage for Roy's first title..

very very very true. my dad is a huge carolina fan and he got pretty upset when i informed him that roy williams has still yet to win a championship with his OWN players. the only player on the 05 team that was his was marvin.

Not as long as Fowler is still around. I'm pretty sure that Lowe would have to flush more than two years down the shitter before Fowler did anything about it.

Sidney still has a ways to go before I'll write him off as a lost cause. But he really, really needs to figure out how to keep the wheels from falling off. Losing is one thing. But not even showing up to the game is completely unacceptable.

I think the thread title should read "Are we as good as UNC's 8-20 team?" To which I would say no. Being a State fan sucks. At least nobody could ever accuse us of being bandwagon fans. There hasn't been a bandwagon to be on at this school in over 20 years. So maybe we're suckwagon fans. Hmmm....

assuming our players get their heads straight (partly Lowe's fault in someway that they aren't) and we get good guard play we are gonna be really good, but right now too many players are trying to play out of their roles and not really giving 100%.
