haha whatever man, let's see how you handle a psycho dog snapping at your INNER THIGH owie!

80lbs of pure muscle able to knock doors off kennels and plow through anything, squat to the ground and no easy way to take it to the floor!

With a few minor tweaks

That could be a tag line for the new hulk film.

Also, it's one thing to kill an animal in as humane a way as possible. . .but it's another thing to kill them in a manner that involves prolonged struggle or suffering. I worry about those people because one day it's Rover and the next day it's their neighbor Roger.

^^^ bingo!

is it ethical to cause suffering if there exists a possibility that the knowledge gained could be somehow beneficial?

I don't know about the ethics of it, but I know some people who make a living killing lab rats for research and I seriously worry about those people. One day it's lab rats and the next day it's their lab partner. Serial killers start out torturing and killing animals.

Haha.

It takes a "special" kind of person to do that kind of work.

I grew up on a farm. I spent a few summers working in a chicken house and a hog house. I've also seen my share of butchering. And I just do not understand (a) how people can take part in that and then eat it and (b) why people choose to make their livings at it.

^^That's why there are so many cases of people torturing the farm animals before slaughtering them, it's a crazy ass breed that goes in for those obs and manage to stay.

I couldn't do it, don't even want to see it.

I think for most people it would depend on the research. Medical research? Sure, I think people can swallow a lot of animal suffering if it cures their grandmother's lung-cancer. Cosmetics testing? Not so much. Still I don't see what that has to do with the case at hand. Was he curing cancer or even fucking testing mascara?

he didn't get sent to federal jail for killing the animals, he was sentenced for conspiracy operating a criminal organization/tax evasion/interstate commerce/racketeering stuff and also violating the terms of his probation for drug use

the state of Virginia is the one prosecuting the animal cruelty

Quote :
"SHOULD NOT HAVE TO DO JAIL TIME........for killing an animal."

actually, depending on the circumstances, jail time is very appropriate for killing animals

Quote :
"especially those of you who eat pigs and cows. fucking hypocrites"

what, but not those who eat birds and fish?

(haha, this shit makes me laugh)

no one is a hypocrite here

YOU are the one putting forward the idea that all animals are equal

without that idea, you couldn't claim hypocrisy on the part of those who eat some animals

while opposing the killings of others

nice try though...

Quote :
"i think the issue is that he tortured animals, not just killed them"

ok, so we're talking about vick here?

he is a piece of shit

I'm proud to say that I had never heard of him before his arrest

and if you think that what he did doesn't deserve jail time

then you are, quite simply, evil and/or stupid

oh and, despite any torture inflicted upon those innocent dogs

killing them for no [good] reason is murder

Quote :
"i think the issue is that if there are people that killed other people and they are continuing to play football, some guy that killed animals should be able to play football"

oic

assuming that that has happened

and as I've said before

an instance in which one's punishment is EXCESSIVELY light

should NEVER be used to justify issuing another sentence that is EXCESSIVELY light

two wrongs don't make a right.

Quote :
"they should put Vick in a cell with a bunch of rabid pit bulls."

as long as "they" aren't the justice system, (whom are prohibited from cruel and unusual punishment,)

you're right, they should

Quote :
"It is only a dog"

you are only a rotten fucking turd stain

Quote :
"Also, it's one thing to kill an animal in as humane a way as possible. . .but it's another thing to kill them in a manner that involves prolonged struggle or suffering."

true

but still, if there was no [good] reason to [humanely] kill the animal

it is murder

Quote :
"like lab animals?"

yes, like lab animals

Quote :
"bingo!

is it ethical to cause suffering if there exists a possibility that the knowledge gained could be somehow beneficial?"

sorry, no

even if the gaining of beneficial knowledge was guaranteed,

causing [non-consensual] suffering (as distinguished from the pain of treatment) is unethical

I'll forgive you though for thinking that ethics are a zero sum game

iow, it's not whether something is ethical or not, but how unethical it is

as in:
Quote :
"I think for most people it would depend on the research. Medical research? Sure, I think people can swallow a lot of animal suffering if it cures their grandmother's lung-cancer. Cosmetics testing? Not so much. Still I don't see what that has to do with the case at hand. Was he curing cancer or even fucking testing mascara?"

Quote :
"I know some people who make a living killing lab rats for research and I seriously worry about those people. One day it's lab rats and the next day it's their lab partner. Serial killers start out torturing and killing animals "

you joke, but.....

Quote :
"lab rats chickens"

again,

it is YOU saying that all animals (and deaths of) are equal, and therefore comparable in this way

but [humanely] killing chickens for food is not unethical for obvious reasons

killing chickens for "science", however, is unethical

albeit, perhaps less unethical than doing nothing to cure rampant disease (read: gray area)

agreed, but I'm glad they do it

haha, you have no idea what you're talking about. you can't even form a fucking cohesive argument--it's just a jumble of statements with no apparent basis and a QED at the end for good measure. do you actually think about what you're typing?

[Edited on December 11, 2007 at 6:27 AM. Reason : hell, you may as well just have said, "it's wrong because i say so"]

I just figure that killing an animal for sport is well...wrong. Were his actions cruel? Yes. But I also think that luring a deer out with urine and salt to a place that's advantageous to shoot it from a hiding spot... is pretty messed up too.

It is just pretty silly that he got 23 months for animal related crimes. WHen many people get much less time for violent crimes against people.
