It doesn't hurt at all. I can clinch it (like when you make a fist), but only weakly. The real problem is I can't move it the opposite way any further than my ring finger is at the moment. It's tough to explain. Think of it like this: I can't move my pinky in the manner that is needed to make the wolf sign. It just feels like it's not responding or something. What do you think and how long should I give it before I go to the doctor? It's not that big of a deal, but it's very difficult to type and kinda weird to hold onto stuff. At least it's on my left hand and I'm right handed. 12/11/2007 5:54:50 PM |

It's cancer. Best to kill yourself now.
But in all seriousness, I have no clue. Did you injure your pinky in any way recently? 12/11/2007 5:59:41 PM |

carpal tunnel syndrome. A drastic analysis but its possible depending how long you've had these symptoms. Either that or you are sleeping on your hand weird and causing it to just have a prolonged state of numbness.

i've experienced pain in other fingers before from carpal tunnel syndrome, especially when i was taking a lot of computer classes in high school. it was never my pinky and i never lost the ability to move anything. maybe you're right. 12/11/2007 6:06:16 PM |

Actually, I doubt it's carpal tunnel, since carpal tunnel causes problems with digits innervated by the median nerve. Your pinky is mostly innervated by the ulnar nerve, which runs outside of the carpal tunnel:
You could have an issue with your ulnar nerve as it courses around your elbow, which is very common. Is your pinky numb/tingling/painful especially after you wake up in the morning?

try sleeping with your arms straight...somehow (yeah not very helpful, but ive heard that ulnar nerve issues are worse if you fold your arms up all night, as it stretches the nerve) 12/11/2007 7:11:44 PM |

it's weak and i can't move it at an angle past my ring finger (see wolf hand sign reference in first post), but that's it. doesn't hurt, no numbness, no tingling 12/11/2007 7:15:27 PM |

Not to be morbid, but it could be the beginnings of Parkinson's - of the three people I know with it, symptoms first starting showing up in their pinky fingers. 12/11/2007 7:16:45 PM |

this sounds more like an orthopedic problem than a neurological thing. have you experienced any trauma to that part of your hand? boxer's break perhaps? 12/11/2007 7:29:31 PM |
