This question is of course based on a strictly hypothetical situation-

For all you assholes who steal cable: I can understand the ease of removing someone else's cable line from the street box and hooking up a splitter- But what if "again just in theory" if there were a funny looking "bolt like" lock covering the input for the coaxial cable? Looks as if it would just twist off but surely doesn't... Of course the neighbors is hooked up, but "your" cable line is just dangling and begging to be plugged in (until fucking TWC can come install shit at ur new place in 3 weeks!)

Just curious as to how one would work around this obstacle

again to reiterate--- this is a hypothetical situation... and the only way that someone stealing cable would affect your quality is if they are splitting off of your line in which case your signal is being divided.

In this scenario- the individual is merely trying to run his own cable through the port designated to his home in order to have cable over the holidays before his/her shit gets "truly" installed. the only thing seperating the cable line from outlet is a pesky little barrel shaped cover/lock

It still affects it. The input isn't enough to support the output, causing the internet to flash on and off, and the cable to cut off. If *hypothetical person* does it, at least pick someone whos not going to have multiple computers coming off of it already.

(2) Any person who violates subsection (a)(1) of this section willfully and for purposes of commercial advantage or private financial gain shall be fined not more than $50,000 or imprisoned for not more than 2 years, or both, for the first such offense and shall be fined not more than $100,000 or imprisoned for not more than 5 years, or both, for any subsequent offense. (3) For purposes of all penalties and remedies established for violations of subsection (a)(1) of this section, the prohibited activity established herein as it applies to each such device shall be deemed a separate violation. (c) Civil action in district court; injunctions; damages; attorney's fees and costs; regulation by States or franchising authorities (1) Any person aggrieved by any violation of subsection (a)(1) of this section may bring a civil action in a United States district court or in any other court of competent jurisdiction. (2) The court may - (A) grant temporary and final injunctions on such terms as it may deem reasonable to prevent or restrain violations of subsection (a)(1) of this section; (B) award damages as described in paragraph (3); and (C) direct the recovery of full costs, including awarding reasonable attorneys' fees to an aggrieved party who prevails. (3)(A) Damages awarded by any court under this section shall be computed in accordance with either of the following clauses: (i) the party aggrieved may recover the actual damages suffered by him as a result of the violation and any profits of the violator that are attributable to the violation which are not taken into account in computing the actual damages; in determining the violator's profits, the party aggrieved shall be required to prove only the violator's gross revenue, and the violator shall be required to prove his deductible expenses and the elements of profit attributable to factors other than the violation; or (ii) the party aggrieved may recover an award of statutory damages for all violations involved in the action, in a sum of not less than $250 or more than $10,000 as the court considers just. (B) In any case in which the court finds that the violation was committed willfully and for purposes of commercial advantage or private financial gain, the court in its discretion may increase the award of damages, whether actual or statutory under subparagraph (A), by an amount of not more than $50,000. (C) In any case where the court finds that the violator was not aware and had no reason to believe that his acts constituted a violation of this section, the court in its discretion may reduce the award of damages to a sum of not less than $100. (D) Nothing in this subchapter shall prevent any State or franchising authority from enacting or enforcing laws, consistent with this section, regarding the unauthorized interception or reception of any cable service or other communications service. "

don't split it at the box you will be caught. split it at the house (preferably in doors if possible) and don't use a regular splitter, use a signal booster. That way no one experiences degraded service

I remember back in the day behind my house we had this metal box that was beaten all to shit by generation after generation of student busting locks off of it. The cover was completely missing.


They replaced it a couple of months ago with this ting that looks like it was installed by the department of defense. The only way I can see to break in to it would be to drill it out or cut the top off. There is no lock on the outside that could be cut off.

Last place I lived the TWC technicians had cut our line and connected it to our neighbors when they ordered cable. They assumed we were stealing it so didn't hesitate cutting out line. I'm not sure why they thought this, because our cable was paid for and our account was current.

Anyways, when we called them out to fix this they cut the neighbor's line and reconnected it to ours. I asked "why'd you do that, they just had theirs hooked up." He said "well I can't tell if they're legitimate customers- if they are I'm sure they'll call in and we'll fix it then."

I was astonished that they could be that asinine.

im in a townhouse thing with 4 units side by side in each big building. i'm on the end, and my cable stuff is shared with the girl next door. i've only messed with it all once when i was disconnecting the ground wire on the stupid directTV thing that was bolted into my fucking wood fence back there.

anyways i dont think the neighbor will split my cable and steal it. even though i wouldnt care too much if she did since i have bandwidth for years. actually im pretty sure theres no wireless over there cause my router logs the hell out of some stupid ipod that shows up around here trying to connect sometimes. just assuming its next door cause of the shitty range
