Why would they allow that? It would not generate any revenue for them whatsoever. I am 99% sure you cannot apply gift card funds to a credit card. 12/26/2007 8:20:34 PM |

people wanting to come into the (retail store) i work at wanting to put gift cards on their credit balance are priceless.

i dont see why it cant be allowed
ultimately the gift card was paid for with actual money
the credit card theoretically pays for an item
this is just replacing theoretical with actual 12/26/2007 10:04:34 PM |

Yeah except best buy has already gotten the money from the credit card purchase, they got it when you spent it. They also got the money from the gift card purchase when it was bought.
Now how to they stand to benefit from allowing you to pay off your balance with Household Bank or whoever is doing their cards now? They would actually end up losing money because the gift card purchase, best buy card purchase, and probably the check card that bought the gift card incurred processing fees. The only way they can profit is if you spend the money from the gift card on a product that they have a margin on.
They cant count unredeemed gift cards as income so they need you to spend your gift card on product. 12/26/2007 10:11:05 PM |

its very simple dudes
the issuing bank of the best buy (or other retail outlet) credit card does not want store credit at best buy. they want cash or checks. 12/26/2007 10:19:14 PM |

Yeah most people don't realize that their store credit cards almost never represent a debt to the store- it's almost always a real bank or holding company. Most best buy employees don't know that either which is why they'll say jack-ass shit like:

This attitude reminds me of the guy I worked with at Radioshack back in highschool who would roll his eyes when people didn't understand that they couldn't return things purchased from the radioshack catalog or website to the store. Sure it says this on the online recipt and the back of the catalog, but if you've worked in retail for more than a week you know that people hardly bother to read giant signs right in front of them let alone fine print.
Rather than act shocked and condescending when a customer doesn't know your policies- maybe explain that the debt they have isn't with the store but with a financing company and that financing company will not take gift cards as payment. If they ask why you can pay off bills in the store, just explain that, as a service to your customers, you offer them that convenience but that since gift cards are for merchandise only they can't be accepted as payments for the outside financing company.12/26/2007 10:28:16 PM |

Not to mention, Best Buy Credit cards are actually through HSBC. So when the gift card was purchased, the money went to Best Buy *not* HSBC. It would probably be a real pain in the ass to deal to (a) shift the money from one company to another and to (b) adjust store and district revenues, etc. Now if BBY chose to operate all of their own credit, it might be a different story; but most retail stores do not issue their own credit and go through a larger company like HSBC. I have several store cards that are all run by HSBC.
Added: Uhm. . .I don't know any Best Buy employee especially customer service rep. except for the high schoolers in the front lanes that are not aware of how the system works.

I wonder if any large store chains still bother to run their own credit services. I doubt it, why take on extra liability when you can just collect commissions and extra purchase-revenue while letting another company absorb the risk and hassle. 12/26/2007 10:31:35 PM |

Some stores will operate credit/financing services for their employees, but I cannot really think of an actual chain store that runs credit/financing for customers. I did have one mom and pop store that "financed" a coffee table for me when I was a teenager, but that's entirely different. 12/26/2007 10:36:17 PM |

^^^^^ There's a difference between being a douche inside a store and bitching about it later on the internet. You don't keep your job being a douche inside the store. I still have my job because I get to vent on the internet and not on my customers, without whom I would have no food.
oh and you should buy one of those little r/c helicopters with some of that $80. Those things are sweet.
